Question Sharp Aquos LC-45GX6U et al

My SD TV is gasping for air so I have been researching flat panel HDTV's. The other day I saw a Sharp Aquos LC-45GD4U at Best Buy which was awesome. It looked great close-up as well as from10 feet back.

I think I would prefer the Sharp Aquos LC-45GX6U because the single cable to the monitor thing.

Has anyone got a strong opinion or facts regarding the Sharp 1080p units? Like how it handle different format inputs like 480i/p, 720p, etc.

Thanks.

Here is my story: I compared the Sharp 37 LCD versus the Sony XBR tube 4 times. In the store on HD there was no comparison as the LCD blew the Sony away. Once I got the Sharp home it was a different story especially on SD when I tried to stretch the picture. The Sharp became very grainy and unwatchable for me. Now have the XBR960 and it does great on SD, which if frankly what I'll watch the most. The lesson is to prepare for the worst case scenario

You're looking at a pretty expensive unit at a very expensive store.

By SD TV, do you mean that you have an old tube tv? If so, that's a pretty big jump. Keep reading hereon about:

1. Pros / cons of plasma, lcd, rearprojection, etc.
2. Pros / cons of EDTV vs. HDTV (my 42" EDTV plasma displays HD programming in stunning fashion. The difference between that quality vs. that offered by HD-version of my plasma is much smaller than the large difference in watching stretch SD programming vs HD programming on a large, widescreen monitor.)
3. Commercial vs. consumer units (commercial less expensive)
4. Big box retailers (BB) vs. online vs. local authorized dealers for commercial

There is alot to learn but its fun and this site is very helpful. I wouldn't jump on the 45" Sharp without first being convinced that you wouldn't rather buy a high-quality 42" EDTV plasma from Pany for $2000 or a 50" HDTV plasma from Pany for $4500, etc.

Thanks for the reply, slowmo.

Yes, it is a tube. And yes it is a big jump. My thoughts were that I don't want to have to buy another TV soon. I am under the impression that HD DVD will be 1080p so I thought that it might be wise to be ready for it.

I have read reviews on the Pany's that are really great and they look fanatastic in the store. The two drawbacks I see to plasma is that it is fairly easy to get too close. I could see the pixels at 6ft. on the 42 inch model. The other is that none I know of have 1080p native. Plus there is the slight chance for burn-in and the LCD should last forever with bulb replacement.

As far as the cost I have an immediate family member working at BB so I get a nice discount. However, I really would like a 50". My viewing room is a large California style room where the viewing distances can very from 6-8' to 15'. The plasmas and the Sharp LCD's all handle my viewing angle problems (~110-120deg) easily.

I originally was ready to get a plasma but after looking at the 37 inch Sharp and the Pany's I began to think it over.

Sorry for running on. I have enjoyed the forum.

Your thoughts.

Thanks for the reply, Tenby.

How was the picture with sidebars? How were you getting the SD signals? Digital cable, OTA, cable? I was looking at the Sharp Manuals and they indicated that you could change the picture size for 480i signals. Did you try that?

Since the channel that is on the most is FOXS NEWS CHANNEL I am somewhat worried about burn-in.

Most of our viewing would be HD, I think. We've got Brighthouse Cable in Central Florida.

Suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

Wink Stay away from Sharp LC45 GX monitor unit!!!!

Hi Chuckles, I have a 37 Sharp GU 6u.My installer advise me to stay away from the monitor box because the monitor box has to be about 6 ft or 8 ft away the HDTV other wise it will be some type of trouble with recepition. I not sure of the reason. I hope this is helpful to you.I enjoy my Sharp 37 and I am happy I listen to my installer. Just stay away from the monitor box or ask some one with better info than I could give you. Stay safe RMCK

RMCK104,

Thanks for the info. How long is the cable from the box to the monitor? How do you receive SD signals? Would you just recommend staying away from the GX or all the Sharps?

Thanks,

When the tv is on display at best buy and circuit city the box is right next to it. Everything that is inside the box is what is built into the tv if no separate box.

I think I saw on another forum the cable is 12'. But the only way to get 1080p on the panel is to direct to the panel with DVI and you can only do that with the GX. So you would need a switch for regular uses. The D4 and D6 won't allow a direct conection to the panel itself.

The DVI and HDMI connections for the LC-45GX6U is on AVC System box. There are no connections on the back of that monitor other than the AVC box cable.

Yes you are correct, E55 KEV.

However, those inputs do not currently accept a 1080p signal. They will take anything else and upscale to 1080p.

One of the 3 cable connectors that run from the AVC to the panel is DVI. That panel input can be driven with a 1080p directly.

Sharp has not said for certain whether they will/can upgrade the 45" GX and D's so that they will accept a 1080p signal in tje AVC or directly into the D's.
