Default PS3 + HDMI + TV's optical audio out = silence

I just received my new Aquos 46" D92 and most things look great, but there is a problem I'd love to solve - using the TV's optical out to feed the current audio to my receiver.

Here is the setup I'd like, and is "kinda" working:
- Multiple HDMI inputs to the TV
- A single optical audio out going to the receiver
- The "current" HDMI input should get played via the receiver

For the TV and DVD player this works awesome. I switch the input on the TV and magically I get the right audio feed through my stereo receiver as well. Awesome.

The PS3 is the bad-guy. The PS3 audio DOES play in the TV's speakers so the PS3 is passing audio via HDMI, but the optical audio out is not reliably passing the sound to my receiver. Games never pass through to the stereo, but work fine in the TV's speakers. DVD's and audio CD's "sometimes" play, but will often break.

This "sometimes" working for audio and DVDs makes me think there is some weird sync thing between the PS3 and the TV. It seems quite reasonable that it could be a bug in the TV, the PS3, or just in how the two work together.

Does anyone know of a setting in the PS3 or Aquos D92 that could solve this? I've tried many things, tried each of the HDMI ports and several cables, all with the same result. Anyone else seen this in other TV combinations?

Thanks!!! If I can't solve this I may need to buy a new receiver (mine only has 2 optical inputs - grr). A solution would save me $700 or more.

i believe you have to go into the PS3's settings... specifically the audio output settings and change the audio output to Optical.. this way the video will still come out through the HDMI but the audio will come out through the optical.
