What is HD?

I've got a Vizio 30" LCD HD monitor. I used it as a big gaming monitor for my PC for quite some time and just recently started using it as a full-time TV. When I watch standard 4:3 programming [which is 90% of the time] it leaves a black "stripe", where the bar was, when I watch widescreen programming. It goes away if I watch only widescreen, so I'm pretty sure it's not permanent. I refuse to watch 4:3 programming squished or stretched, as it looks awful and unnatural, but I HATE HATE HATE having that stripe on the side when I watch HD programming or play HD video games.
Is there ANYTHING I can do to get this to stop happening or to get it to go away quicker? Will fans help? |

It goes away if I put it onto widescreen all day or if I run a "pixel fixer" video [flashing red green blue etc full-screen for an hour or so]
