Default atsc tuners mandated-info. needed!

A person on the Vizio post said that the government has mandated that all tvs made by July, 2006 have high-def. tuners? Is this accurate? Has the date changed? If this is accurate, seems that you could get a real good deal on high def. sets without tuners now (most people don't use the tuners anyhow). Any info. guys?

Here's an excerpt from a cnet review guide that should answer your question. Notice the "note" at the bottom that excludes monitors from these requirements.

FCC tuner mandate: You may have heard that all TVs will have to be HDTVs by a certain date. That's not technically correct. The FCC has mandated that certain sizes of televisions on sale on certain dates are required to have built-in ATSC tuners--but the TVs don't necessarily have to be able to display HDTV resolutions. Here's a look at the FCC's proposed rollout as it stands as of January 2006:

TV sizes that must include ATSC tuner*
March 1, 2006 All TVs 25 inches or larger
March 1, 2007 All TVs regardless of screen size
*Note: Does not apply to monitors, such as many plasmas and front-projectors, that lack built-in standard (NTSC) tuners.

The FCC is mandating that all analog broadcasts stop by 2009 and that all TVs 25" and larger have a built in ATSC tuner. There is nothing about that all TVs must be HD.

From http://www.dtv.gov/DTV_booklet.pdf :
"Today, all TVs with a screen size of 25 inches or larger are required to have a
DTV tuner. By March 1, 2007, all TVs sold in the United States, regardless of screen size,
must incorporate a DTV tuner."

Jerry1808's statement of the schedule is correct. Note that sets with screen sizes 13" and smaller have been explicity added to the list that must comply by March 1, 2007.

Source: FCC News Release dated Nov 3, 2005 (the most recent FCC release on the topic).

P.S. to robertva Thanks for the additional link. Everyone should download a copy.
