I went to CC last night to see the new 42PX60U Panny. I was surprised at the strange picture quality. CC had all the HDTVs running showing HDnet channel via Cox Cable, so I was able to compare all the HDTVs with the same signal. At close inspection, the Panny's colors and picture quality appeard to be globbed (bubbled) together! I could turn my head and see the Philips 42PF7320A picture was clearer! I said, "this can't be right".
By the way, I saw the same effect at Sears on the 42PX60U demo model showing a DVD (using the 3 lead hook-up). Is Panasonic using some type of software-effect or pixel fill-in for lower bandwidth HD signals, that gives that bubbly-look (sorry best way I know how to discribe it) to the images on the screen? I want to buy the Panny, but the picture quality has me concerned. Can someone explain what is going on with the new Panny? |

Well since you've only seen that model at CC and Sears, I can only guess you haven't seen a properly calibrated model with a good quality HD feed. Check other threads out in this forum and you'll see the positive responses so far.

It is 'sharpening', a hardware-based image-processing algorithm that produces such neat artifacts as 'clayface' and 'posterization'. Panasonic has made this virtually non-defeatable in a vain attempt to match the natural sharpness of high-resolution LCDs.

When I saw it at Best Buy it looked great.
You say you looked closely. How close? I probably looked at it from a few feet away. This makes me want to have yet another look at it...closer this time. |
