Has to do with the physical construction of the glass components that hold the gas...can't be made small enough next to each other to form a higher resolution.

Nothing to let him know about since he's no longer around. Please note the last time any of those guys posted on this site...it's well over a year ago.

Well I caught some of the discussion. But I have a 40" Sony that is 1920x1080. So I am pretty sure the statement "anything under 50" is not HD" is not a correct statement.

Actually the Panasonic is available right now, you just have to look hard for it.

I have a question though. Why can LCDs (42" and below) produce a higher resolution and not plasmas (42" and below)?
Plasma's are just weird. The resolution they use isn't even widescreen! They've cheated and used rectangular pixels, which has to distort the image somehow?

How about the ALiS panel? 1024i x 1024i

http://www.fujitsu.com/downloads/MAG...-2/paper12.pdf

This technology which is was used by many companies...Sony, Philips, Hitachi, etc. I can't see that it meets the requirements for HD.

I don't want to start another fight! Just curious...

HD or not HD?

Size of display has nothing to do with it, it's a matter of resolution in terms of pixels.

There are those who consider anything with at least 720 lines HD. Personally, I think that's silly--so a 320 x 768 display would be HD?

IMHO, unless it has at least as much resolution as one of the ATSC HD formats (1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080), I don't consider it HD. That doesn't mean it's worthless, or looks bad, just that it isn't really HD, as too much of the HD signal is being thrown away in the downscaling.

I also prefer to stay away from displays that don't use square pixels as it inevtiably leads to distortion when an HD signal (all of which use square pixels) is scaled to the native resolution of the panel.

For a 16:9 widescreen HD display, the available resolutions that use square pixels are 1280 x 720, 1366 x 768 and 1920 x 1080. Widescreen 1024 x 768 or 1024 x 1024 use rectangular pixels.

I really don't see the big deal. 1024x768 isn't a TRUE High Def resolution. That doesn't mean it can't look just as good as another TV with a 1280x720 resolution.

What it does mean though is that ALL HD content will be resized. With 1280x720 or 1820x1080, only some content will be resized based on whether or not its 720P, 1080i or 1080P.

Amateur-

If that's a link to the Pioneer PRO-1140HD, then yes, it's HD (it has 1365 x 768 pixels) which falls between 720p (1280 x 720) and 1080i/p (1920 x 1080).

Mshulman-

Like I said, it doesn't mean it will look bad, but it won't look as sharp as a higher resolution display and may have visual artifacts (particularly jaggies on moving edges) as a result of the scaling and non-square pixels.

Also, there is very little HD content at 720p, the vast majority of HD content is 1080i, and on a 1024 x 768 display, you are seeing less than 40% of the resolution in a 1080i or 1080p signal.

Oooh, nice catch. I did not see that one coming.

Some people consider HD as a very subjective thing, which it can be.

But not the ATSC, the only organization that gets to define what HD means
