After owning LCD RP, CRTs rp, & Direct tube HD sets, I'm starting to learn why some sets are so expensive. I no longer judge a HD set by it's HD signal, but by the way it displays standard digital. Yea, of course the HD looks good on every set, it's HD, but the standard channels looked like shit on my CRT RP Sony, and a little better on the LCDRP. On my XBR LCD it's big of a climb in the quality of standard digital, and I reordered my expanded package because of the quality. But on the Panasonic Plasma I just got, the 37 inch has 1024 pixels across, and my XBR has 1366 across. CNN now looks like virtual HD, most likely because it is less up an upscale to scale 740 pixels across into 1024, rather than 1366. Of course the HD is better on the XBR, because it is 1366. I was never a proponent of up conversion until I got these higher end sets, now I see what good sets can do. I think there is a limit to an upscale. Asking a standard digital signal to go from 740 across to 1250, 1366, or 1920, may be too much, but it seems to working on this 1024 set. So much in fact my upscale DVD player appears to be real HD quality. So it's not the HD channels in which I judge a set, but the standard digital.
