Question Off brand LCD TV's---Who makes them?

I have seen so many unknown brands of LCD TV's this holiday season and was wondering who makes the following brands:

Protron
Magnavox
Olevia
Westinghouse
Hyundai
Polaroid
Astar
SVA
Norcent
Maxent
Dell
Gateway
HP

In addition, are any of the above in the same league as Sony, Samsung, Panasonic or Toshiba? Any worth considering?

Syntax Olevia is clearly the best of the B-Class brands you listed.

As for the A-Class, you left out Sharp AQUOS which along with the SONY Bravia XBR are the BEST HD LCDs. Samsung would be currently 3rd. With Panasonic and Toshiba toss-up for 4th.

Thanks for the reply. Is it true that Panasonic makes the HP LCD's for them?

Default Does this mean my Syntax TV pix will be poor ?

Does this mean that my Syntax 26" LCD HD Ready TV will never have a picture as good as my 20" Sharp Aquos when using a non-high-def cable service to both sets ?

That's not a great model... for one, it's a 15:9 panel... the Olevia 27" is 16:9 and has better specs...

I am assuming that you have the Syntax LT26HVX. Because if you have the HVE then RSawdey is correct that your aspect is 15:9. If you have the HVX then you will be fine compared with the Sharp 20"

The HVX is 16:9 with a higher resolution and contrast ratio.

I am not sure who makes HP's 26" HD LCD. I am guessing Sharp as they have a good business relationship as Sharp uses HP's computer servers and also looking at the HP panels, they look very "Sharpish".

However, DLP- made by Chinese company Delta Electronics and their Plasmas are made by Panasonic (at least the glass)

Nope. I do have the LT26HVE because it was only $470 new. Seemed like too much of a bargain to pass up.

A techie at Syntax tried to tell me that running a NON high def cable signal to the LT26HVE will look worse than running the same signal to my Sharp 20" Aquos. He said Hi Def TV's always look worse with a non Hi Def signal when comparing them to a Non HD ready TV with a Non-Hi-Def signal.

Is he correct ? Should I feed a high def signal to my Syntax before deciding to return it ? The Syntax never gets sharp as I posted in another Forum.

See here: Blurry Picture on Syntax LT26HVE

Default 26"

He's comparing the 27" HVS to the 26" HVE. Go to the Syntaxgroups.com website and compare the 26" HVX and 27" HVX side-by-side specs. The specs go 26HVX > 27HVX > 27HVS > 26HVE. Thus if you want the best one out of the 26 or 27" group, get the LT-26HVX.

I will do that. BTW, the LT-26HVX seems to have the lowest price, after rebate, at Buy.com

Note that LT26HVE is only 15:9, and will cut off the wings. Several low end manufacturers are using these panels, beware...

The smaller Toshiba LCD TVs (23" and under) are not made by Toshiba. They are either made by LG or Orion (Sansui) for Toshiba.
