Trying to Play Laptop through Panasonic Plasma

I have been trying to play my laptop computer through my Panasonic plasma (via HDMI) but to no avail. The TV is a 50" about 7 years old (sorry, don't have the model number with me). I was wondering if I'm missing something here. Might I be able to run it through my PS3 instead? Any and all suggestions would be great.

Most laptops will require hooking up the TV and then reboot. It should see the TV and enable it.
