Smile Help me pick the best HDTV under $1400!

Hi everyone. I am buying a HDTV for the first time. Please help me pick the best one $1400 can buy!

1. How far away will you be from the display when watching it?

8 feet, but I can move the TV back to 9 feet.

2. What TV will it be replacing (i.e. 27" tube TV, etc)

At least 15 year old Sony 33" CRT.

3. What will you be watching on it (i.e. 1/3 movies, 1/3 TV shows, 1/6 Sports, 1/6 gaming console, etc)

90% TV shows, 10% movies

4. Will a computer be connected to use the display as a monitor? If so, what percent of the time?

Probably not. If at all, 5% of the time.

5. Will you be getting a Blu-ray player to watch movies and will you be getting any HD service from cable/sat, or will you just be watching SD programming, and an upscaling SD DVD player?

Most likely HD service from cable.

6. Are you looking for the best in class display, the best bargain display, or best bang for the buck in the middle display?

Best in class display.

7. Are you interested in seeing 3D with the new 3DTVs? If not, what about next year since TVs are usually kept for many years so consider that?

No, but 3D would be a small plus.

8. What is the room lighting situation? (i.e. can you control the lighting? Can you use light blocking blinds, etc to control it?)

Room lighting can be controlled. However, the lighting is usually set dim.

9. What is your budget range?

Under $1400

10. Will people be watching at multiple viewing angles or just usually one person sitting directly in the center?

90% one person, 10% multiple angles

11. When will most viewing be done on the display (i.e. Daytime or after sunset)?

After sunset

Thank everyone!

I would suggest at least a 50" plasma for your situation, look into Panasonic's and Samsung's.

Here are two you can take a look at to get an idea:
Panasonic TC-P50ST30

Samsung PN51D6500

I would suggest getting out to some stores and look at TV's for yourself as well. LED-LCD or regular LCD's are still a good option but overall the best PQ will come from a plasma.

Thanks for the reply. While I do like a bigger screen, I value PQ a lot more. With a budget of $1400 I don't think I can get anywhere near best in class PQ with a 50" plasma. Can you suggest something between 40" to 46"?

I found it here:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...28122(ME).aspx

I am not sure if they still have any left. I'll have to call the store tomorrow to see - it can only be bought in store. But I shop there all the time, so I know it's completely trustworthy.
