What is HD?

It seems like you guys are a wealth of knowledge so please allow me to ask a quick question. I currently have an HDMI cable connected from my DVD player to my LN-R408D and an Optical digital audio cable out from the TV to my receiver. When I try to switch the audio out setting on the DVD menu to digital (with the bitstream option as opposed to PCM) I get an on screen message that says "HDMI Audio not supported". I also cannot change the option on the TV's audio menu from PCM to Dolby because it is "grayed out". Any suggestions? I know I could just run the digital audio out from the DVD direct to the receiver, but I'd like to know why this isn't working. Thanks in advance.

At init, HDMI runs a dialog between the two devices to determine abilities... TV says "I can only handle stereo with 2 speakers", so the STB won't try to send a signal it can't handle... and that's all the TV has to pass on thru the digital audio out. This SHOULD be configurable in the TV, but I don't know of any that do this right...
Ah Ha! Maybe I'm on to something... go into the Sound Setup on your TV & change the setup to use "SRS TruSurround" (really FakeSurround with 2 speakers)... maybe you're setup to only use stereo... perhaps this will change the negotiated quality on the next reboot... and give you DD 5.1 to pass thru... If this works PLEASE report back, since there are others with the same issue. |
