Default Contrast Ratio? Response Time?

I trying to figure out the meaning of some of these specifications.
For example, I was looking at the LCDs flat panel TVs on J & R, Crutchfield, etc.
On what is considered some of the better LCD TVs like Sony and Sharp, they show the contrast ratio as 800:1.
While on a newcomer HP, they show the contrast ratio as 4000:1. Thats a lot of difference????
On LCDs, I always thought the response time was important. I noticed that under specifications, hardly any
of the dealers show that. Even Sharp doesn't show that on its own website.

Default See it then believe it...

I've read (Consumer Reports) that some manufacturers use different methods to arrive at their quoted specs so that sometimes sets with wildly difering specs can look pretty similar. Best bet is to find a shop with lots of sets and compare with your own eyes under similar circumstances. Then you can judge whose specs seem reliable or how they compare between brand a and brand b. Good luck. I just posted some questions I have on a set that I think I'm going to go with. good luck with your search!

The specs are on the Sharp site, but you've got to dig for them...

Default Manufacturer's contrast ratio, brightness, etc. are useless!

Many manufacturers make their contrast ratio, brightness, etc. are very high. In fact, the average contrast ratio of the best plasma can only reach 800:1 and the LCD's is about 400~600:1.
