Default 1080p vs 1080i

I used my QAM tuner to scan for digital and HD channels on my new Panasonic Plasma and got a few that are in HD such as NBC and CBS. However they are in 1080i not 1080p. Are they still in true HD or not? What is the difference between the two?

1080i=interlacesd
1080p=progressive scan (blu ray or game systems)

tv broadcast max out at 1080i, that's all you can get. Both 1080i and 720p are "true" HD, some tv broadcasts will be 1080i others 720p, they are both HD.

What model did ya get?

To your question the difference between 1080i or 1080p.

It is the same info just delivered a little differently.

A 1920x1080i odd/even signal will get to your TV at 960x540 "odd lines" every 60th of a second and 960x540 "even lines" every other 60th of a second.
Your TV then puts the two together so every 30th of a second you have a 1920x1080 signal of 2,073,600 pixels of information on your screen.

A 1920x1080p signal will get to your TV at 2,073,600 pixels of information every 60th of a second and then send the same info the next 60th.

So every 30th of a second, whether you are getting a 1080i or a 1080p signal, you are getting the same information.

I got the Panasonic G15 42" model. Picked up a bunch of music channels also when i did the scan which was cool. I just wonder if it would be worth it to get HD from the cable company. I have no idea how many stations now broadcast in HD. Good thing tho is i can now watch the NFL playoffs in HD.

Yes you should get HD service from your cable company. Almost all channels are now available in HD, 100's.

Is there actual screenshots or videos to show the difference other than equations and theories??

Also if there are screen shots out there for the following:

Judder?

Bleeds?

Halos?

and all these HDTV terms that are widely used...

Sorry chief, a small joke.... judder occurs with a moving image its where one of the video frames is repeated more often than the other frames and you get a hesitation in the smoth flow of motion on the screen...

All i can say is HD rocks!!! Just watched the Saints-Cardinals in HD and i can't believe the clarity of the picture. Heck i even check out the Weather channel just to see the graphics on that channel that just jump out in HD.

The info button on TVs are showing what the incoming signal is, not what/how they are displaying it. All flat panels are called fixed pixel displays because they only display EVERYTHING in the one native resolution they can. Your 1080p display will simply deinterlace the 1080i (highest broadcast signal) to 1080p automatically since 1080p is all it can display all the time.
