Default TC-P46s1 ghost effect...

Has anyone had any problem with ghosts on the s1 series? I have been seeing it on everything from basic cable to DVD'S. What could cause this? It is extremely noticeable on "King of the Hill."

On "King of the Hill," it occurs on the right side of black lines. Oddly enough, there are multiple ghosts on the right side of back lines. Some channels/shows only have one ghost or they appear on both sides.

Overall I am happy with this tv, but I would like to exchange it if its defective. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brett

If it is varying with each channel then it is likely the cable/sat source as the cause.

Is this with SD channels or HD channels? What is your sharpness and contrast settings? Heck what are all your settings on the TV? That all can effect and contribute to this.

I'm sorry for lacking important details.

I am breaking in my Tv using Cinema mode. Panasonic recommended CINEMA after I called them about Image Retention. So far, it has worked great as I have had no more IR issues. Considering this, my settings are as follows.

Contrast 100
Brightness 58
Color 41
Tint 0
Sharpness 50

I am currently using a antennae to coaxial, bridged with a signal booster and distortion eliminator made by Monster Power. The actual Tv is converting the signal.

The ghosting also happens with DVD's using a Monster 1000 HDMI cable. So far the ghosting has been the worst in cartoon shows.(South Park, Family Guy, KotH)

4 inches to the left I have a 120 Ps3, 2 Wii's, and 2 Xbox 360's.(multiple consoles are for LAN parties) 4 inches to the right I have a 32" JVC tube tv.

This is all the info that I can think of. I truly hope that my set isn't defective because I really love it and packing it up would be a heart-breaker although I will exchange it for another if necessary.

Thanks everyone,
Brett

Can you post pics of the issue?

I can tell you that you should not have contrast at anywhere near 100% even in CINEMA mode. I have mine contrast at 58% for nighttime with Cinema mode and at 64% during the daytime. Setting contrast so high can exaggerate the issues (and cause blooming) with showing SD signals on a large HD screen. SD signals were only intended for screens as large as 27", so PQ goes down with SD signals as the screen size goes up from there.

Click on the "SETTINGS" link in my signature and try those settings. See if that helps with the issue. It may look dimmer than you like, but believe me it will be a more accurate picture and you will quickly adjust to it after less than a week.

Setting contrast so high can exaggerate the issues (and cause blooming) with showing SD signals on a large HD screen.

Exactly what issues? I wasn't aware of any issues when I purchased this tv. Is this ghosting normal? I don't wanna box this tv up and drive 100 miles to get another with the same issue.

Yeah. I was told to use CINEMA by a Panasonic techie. I was also told to use the zoom option to avoid statics like scores and banners.

I will try your settings throughout the day tomorrow and if all else fails I will just bring her back. Its hard to adjust to such a big color difference but I'll try.

Thanks again,
Brett

EDIT- I have already noticed the ghosting with your settings, however they aren't quite as noticeable. Little issues like this can drive me crazy though. I'm still gonna wait for an answer from others as well. I know that there must be videophile like me somewhere on this site.

Have you tried connecting the antenna directly to your TV bypassing the monster POS. Also when you notice if on FG, SP, KotH, are they the older SD versions, or is it brand new episodes that are in HD. Also I believe they all broadcast in 4:3 are you stretching the screen or is everything in its native format?

Yup...Ive tried bypassing the power regulator and filter, and the PQ is noticeably worse.

I'm not sure what versions the shows are. I at first thought it was blooming, but booming would be a complete outline...not just to the right of dark images. There are multiple ghost images during these shows, about 3 to 4 to be exact. (KotH) In SP, there are two sets of eyes on everyone. One extra set above their original set.

I would call the cable company if a straight feed is showing these problems, since it would point to a signal problem if the signal booster/conditioner improves the display. I notice you said that the problem is also exhibited on DVDs, is it to the same degree that it is with regular cable, if so I would try one last thing: Move the TV and just the DVD player to a new room (leave both unplugged for several hours) then connect the DVD player directly to TV (preferably with a set of cables you know are good, maybe a friend could test them to make sure they dont have any problems) if it still exhibits the same symptoms then try a new DVD player, if it still isn't better then it's the TV call for service or return it.
