Default HELP PLEASEEEEE....Philips Flat screen plasma tv and Blue Ray

I have a 42 inch Philips Plasma flat screen tv. Model number is 42PF9631D/37. I just bought a Sony Blue Ray DVD player, model number 360. When I hook it up to the HDMI cable, you can see its trying to pick up the signal but fails to do so. I've tried different HDMI cables and no luck. I tried the other HDMI slot in the TV, buty no luck. A repairman said my model TV does not support Blue Ray. Saying that the TV has some kind os Microsoft software in it with a version of 1.0. He said the Blue Ray requires the TV to have a version of 1.3. Now this is different than the Firmware software. I already downloaded the new version of that. Anyone have any insight to this? I never, ever, would have bought this tv if I knew it couldn't support Blue Ray.

Try hooking it up with component cables (red, green, blue) and see if the tv recognizes it.

It does that way with the red, white, and yellow cables. But doesn't that defeat part of the whole HD viewing capability? All I watch is movies. So I want optimum viewing capabilities. If the reception and graphics going through the red/white/yellow cables is the same as the HDMI cable then I won't worry about it. but I've seen Blue Ray via the HDMI cable and looked superior. true?

Component cables are just as good, and in some aspects, better at delivering high definition than HDMI. You will notice no signal degradation. A lot of us prefer the rgb rather than HDMI since rgb is less problematic. Not so sure what the repairman was telling you but it sounds like he was referring to the HDMI specs (1.3) which is a newer spec but is in no way Microsoft related. If you just purchased the HDMI cable locally, take it back and get some decent component cables and try again.

Component cables are for the red, blue and green inputs
red, white and yellow are what is known as composite and only deliver a 480i signal...you need conponent also contact philips and see what they say about the HDMI problem if you can get anyone on the phone who knows what they are talking about...........good luck

The red/white/yellow cable is composite not component. The best you will get with that is a 480i SD resolution. You need the RED/GREEN/BLUE cable connections that IS component and it can handle all HD resolutions except 1080p.

BTW, that 1.0 & 1.3 spec is for HDMI and not MS code.

Try to make sure you have the TV on and with the HDMI input selected BEFORE turning on the BD360 and see if that works with the HDMI connection. It sounds like a HDCP (HDMI's copy protection) handshake issue which is fairly common especially with older displays.

But also check the setup menu for the BD360 to make sure the highest resolution it sends out is 1080i since your model display does NOT accept a 1080p signal. Do this while the composite cables are being used so you can see the setup menu. This alone may solve your problem.

Hope this helps!

Thank you all. Now here's the real silly question. My Plasma Flat screen only has red, white, yellow composite inmputs. If I use RGB where would I plug them in on the TV? Or would it go into the cable box? There's one other place for cables under the flat screen which is for a red/white/black inputs. Thanks ahead of time.

Your set has two sets of component inputs; labeled AV1 and AV3.
They are on the back of the set to the right of the HDMI connectors.

There is a single component connection right under the DVI connection. Check out this link:

EDIT:
Scottnot is correct. That Philips tutorial I linked to is incorrect and must be generic. Look at page 3 of your manual (page 5 of the PDF) where it shows the connections. Here is a link to the manual online:

you say you have everything working now. I guess from the thread you mean thru the component input and not the hdmi? I have the same sony 360 and a philips 63" plasma. same problem with hdmi not syncing up. I can get the component cables and fiber working fine, and all looks and sounds pretty good with that.
What i would like to know is why the hdmi doesnt work? I can hook a magnavox blue ray and it works. i have other hdmi devices that also work.
I do notice that the Sony is sending signals. if you change the input on the tv from 1 port to another and i have a blue ray disk loaded the tv does detect 1080, if i use a normal dvd it detects 480. So it would seem the sony is sending something out on the cable.
So i assume the 2 devices have a hdcp issue.
I plan on swapping to another brand of blue ray. any thoughts on one that should work, besides magnavox?

The problem is with the HDMI specs. They have many different available protocols for negotiating HDCP (copy protection) but the spec does not require ALL devices to handle ALL protocols, so some devices handle some and others could handle the others. If there is not a common protocol then you have problems like this. They SHOULD HAVE made ALL protocols mandatory for ALL devices IMO and then HDMI work be very nice.

Did you update the BDP360 to the latest firmware? BD players will require periodic updating because the BD format uses dynamic copy protection while SD DVD had static CP that never changes. That is why getting a good brand BD player that has a history of timely and functioning firmware updates like Sony and Panasonic. I can tell you one brand to stay away from and that is Samsung BD players. They have probably the worst history with updates of the major brands.

So before returning the BDP360 make sure you update it to the latest firmware as this could likely solve the issue.

Hope this helps!

If the BR player is set to output 24 FPS and the TV does not support this, often you will not get any picture. Double check the settings on the Blu Ray player to be sure you have selected an output signal compatible with your specific TV. This is not an uncommon problem.
