Need help selecting LCD or LED

Hello everyone, first post, so here goes.

I have wanted to go HD for a long time now, and my wife is finally going to let me do so since she noticed that BB is running the 3 years no interest financing, and our basement tv is dying.

I currently have a 35" mitzsubishi black diamond sd tv in our great room. It is pretty well lit by the sun, but we have blinds. Well, to tell the truth, it's pretty bright when the sun is out. We have a sliding glass door where the sun is and when you sit on the couch directly in front of the tv, the sun is directly to the left, and we have a big picture window to the right. I was considering a plasma, but since it's so bright, and heavier, I don't think it would work. Plus I watch ESPN News alot, and there is the bottom line on it.

I am looking at getting something 46" or 47" inches (I'd like a larger one, but wifey might not go for it). I would like to wall mount it because we have 2 small children. I have dish network, and would go hd once I get the tv.
I watch alot of sports and play xbox 360

and my wife watches regular programming most of the time. We also watch movies as well.

I would like to get a LCD LED tv that has 240hz (I've waited this long, I want to be a little future proof), since more and more are coming out. I'd like to be able to have this before the holidays, and it's not really a gift, but if I get one, I would be fine not getting any gifts.

My friend just get the new Vizio 42" 240hz (not led) tv for less than $900 at walmart.com.

I was looking at the LG led tv (47LH90) and have also considered the Vizio 240hz (47LH90 ). If I get a Vizio, it would probably be from dell.com.

I don't think that I can spend over $2000.

I should add that I would be open to a Sony that is under $2000, and if I get it from bestbuy, they deliver and hook it up for free.

I would suggest the Toshiba Regza line of TV's. Secondly since LED technology is in it's infancy and all of the bugs have not been worked out, (uneven screen lighting, etc.) I would suggest staying away from them at this time.

I would agree. I know in the store the LEDs look really good and for some reason the off angle viewing looks ok, but you will be disappointed when it's in your house. I returned my new LED/lcd after two weeks. The off angle viewing on the LEDs in bad and for me the blur from them is still to much for me. If you are sensitive to blur it will really bother you even at 240hz. Be careful.

I am looking at those Sony's at BB since they running that big sale.
I do like my friend's new vizio, and my neighbor has an old 47" (or 46"?) one and bought his son the 120hz one. He is going to get the 55" led one in the spring.
I would get the Vizio 47" Class 1080p 240Hz LCD HDTV, SV471XVT http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...i_sku=12164806
for less than $1200. I've never really watched much HDTV, so I don't know the difference. I play my 360 on my 21.5" asus lcd monitor (which is 1080p).
How do you guys compare these sets?

If the Panasonic TC-P50V10 plasma was cheaper, and my living room wasn't as bright, I would go with that.

My head is spinning...I was all but decided on a vizio 47" 240hz lcd, now I have all these other products entering my mind.
Won't having a plasma be bad being in a sunny room, and will it be harder to hang?

I think that plasmas have more disadvantages than advantages although they do supply greater contrast. I would stay away from plasma cause they are on their way out with only three manufacturers left. Toshibas were rated well so def a good consideration. I have a 37" Vizio XVT (SV370XVT) and its picture definately is comparable to top rated samsungs. The only thing I would recommend is that when you are shopping for a new tv ask the sales person if you can play around with the remote and the settings. Adjust the backlight, brightness, color and sharpness to your liking..then you will know what tv is best for you. Alot of times you can adjust a lower end model to look like a higher end model...and it may save you some money. Happy shopping...theres plenty of choices haha

Plasma and LCD are both bad in direct sunlight. The difference between the two is that a plasma will reflect the light where the LCD will wash out. Personally, I don't watch TV in bright lighting and would get curtains so I would not have to worry about glare or light. Any plasma TV now will be brighter and glare less than any CRT TV you've had. I don't know about you, but when buying a TV, I refuse to get subpar blacks, motion handling, and colors. The choice is clear; plasma.

Also, a plasma will be no more difficult to hang than an LCD. They will use the same type of mounts.

After reading the highlighted part I just have to say you need to do more research. We have countless threads here about this and even a sticky about it as well that show the opposite of what you stated here.

Total misinformation. Plasma TV's have LCD's beat in almost every category with the exception of excessively bright rooms. Otherwise, LCD's are still striving to even come close in black levels, contrast, off axis viewing, color gamut and so on. On they're way out, no sirree. There are new models being developed as we post here. There are 4 name brand manufacturers and several no name manufacturers currently selling plasma TV's.

Here is a few pics of my 50" Samsung Plasma PN50B860 in a kinda bright room. Have had the TV for a little over a month now. The TV does not have direct sunlight but room does get good sun. The tv picture looks pretty good even with good light coming in the room. Best Buy has it for $1900 but when I bought it I got BB to price match amazon.com which right now has the same TV for $1680.

I guess if my wife still let's me choose a tv, I'm going to go with the Panasonic 50" V10.
I got my last tv in 1998, and it still works fine. When I finally get another TV, I want it to be a good one. The extra $500 or so isn't a factor, but don't want one over $2,000.
My Mitzsubishi black diamond had a few hiccups where it would shut off by itself in 2006, but it came out of it on it's own.

It will go downstairs if we get the new set.

How long should the plasma last, and any other insight would be great!

The Plasma will last 100,000 hours. That is about 11 years if the TV was on all the time. I would defiantly get a Plasma. I have my 54" Panasonic in a half way bright room right next to windows with shades. It has a great picture in the day. LCD technology has not caught up yet with Plasma. There are some here who will say Plasma's are over rated and LCD is superior. But listen to the guys who have had both and spent time calibrating each of them. I have had both a 2009 LCD and 4 different Plasma's. If you watch Blu-Ray movies or play video games or watch sports.... the Plasma is far superior then LCD's or the current LED's.... They have better motion control and viewing angles and black levels. But they have a good sales pitch at the stores with all the LCD's in the bright environment.... they seam to look better then the Plasma's. Until you get them home and put it right next to your Plasma.

A Panasonic 50" V10 would be the best choice. As for longevity, look at about 20 years+.
