My plasma is High Def.

Hello everyone!
I was wondering if someone could help me... I am having this problem with my Plasma Philips 42PF5320 which is flickering the image on screen from 2 months by now. It only happens when the TV is already switched on for a while, after a few moments has no flickering at all and then the flickering comes right back on. It is going worser every day. It happens with HDMI cable, SCART and even PS2 AV Cable. (TV, AV1, AV2, AV3 and HD) Has this happened to anyone else? I would like to hear an opinion from you, please. Many thanks in advance. |

Make sure you turn off dynamic constrast, and if it has a automatic room light feature you should turn that off also.
Good luck & welcome to the forum!

Thank u PFC5,
In the HD option, i cannot modify the Contrast, because it is not available. The strangest thing is that has only began to happen when i took the TV off the wall, and place it on the provided support. I took it to a TV repair guy that told me it didn't flicked at all for the 2 days it had been switched on. I then brought it back my place and after 5 days, it began to flicker again to the point where it is almost impossible to watch anything at all. At another TV repair shop, told me it would probably be the Power Supply, or the Panel or the Boards (X or Y). What about the Bulbs???. I would like to hear your opinion, Thanks. |

THat's a tough one paulekas. When you cannot duplicate the problem for a technician, everybody assumes you are just "seeing things." Like having a toothache that stops as soon as you go into the dentist.
Having the flicker be absent at startup but then occur as the set warms up seems to imply it is happening in a het sensitive component, perhaps the tiniest element on a circuit board or perhaps in the power supply. If you can give the technician ONE MORE TRY at least to have somebody agree with you, maybe you can ship the set back to the manufacturere for a warranty fix. But make sure that it isn't a technicians who is "paid not to see defects" if you catch my drift. But don't waste your time if it is only you who can see the defect. That might run up a BIG shipping bill for nothing. What does your family say? How long does your warranty run? Perhaps with a little more time the problem will either correct itself (dubious) or get worse and steady (more likely.) Have you tried an Over the Air signal...if that is bad too, then at least you can absolve the cable company from responsibility. Here's my logic: The set is a given and thus the only difference between playing in your house or in the technician's workshop is the signal. Does even a DVD look crappy? If so, at the very least you could bring your DVD along and PLAY it for the technician...if only a few minutes are required for the fliicker, then you should be able to show him the problem. If it occurs with a DVD at your house and NOT at the technician's I think you might need to call in an EXORCIST. Last edited by zip2play; 10-10-2009 at 07:30 AM. |

It could be that something gets reset when you unplug it as the reason why the Tech couldn't see the flickering. Next time it happens to you try unplugging it for an hour or so and see if it goes away after you plug it back in.
Do you have it plugged into a surge suppressor? If not, get one and try that also, since you SHOULD have one anyway for your equipment. ![]() Also try turning off "Active Control with Light Sensor" which adjusts the picture based on room light so if it is happening during the daytime and the sun outside gets blocked from clouds/trees moving in the wind it could be the cause also. This is a EDTV plasma and not a HDTV, so it is not worth spending a lot to fix this IMO, and maybe if it only happens during the daytime you could buy a new one and move this to a bedroom where it is usually watched at night if you cannot turn off that light sensor or you could make sure blinds are closed also to have constant light control. Since it only started after moving it off the wall the place where the sensor is likely lower and more in the the direct sunlight coming into the room now. Hope this helps!

Thanks again PFC5,
I have turned off the "Active Control with Light Sensor" but it remains the same flickering, so i don't think it's because of that. Another strange thing is that it also happens at night. Do you think it could be something with the Power Supply, the Boards (X, Y) or the Panel??? I am loosing my patience with this thing because, like you said, i don't want to pay a lot of money for the repair, even more when i don't have any idea of what is happening. Again, it happens with all (TV, AV1 (DVD), AV2 (TV BOX), AV3 (PS2) and HD (TV BOX again). I have to mention the fact that i have tried various Scart Cables, various Power Supply Cables and various HDMI Cable. I remeber now that the HDMI Cable is connected to a DVI Adapter, could it be this??? Thanks a lot!!! |

Well then it could likely be the power supply is near it's limit (or failing) and that is the cause of the flickering as a possible cause. What is the contrast ratio you are using? It could be that you have it set too high and that is overloading a possibly "tired" or nearing failure power supply.
Try lowering the contrast/picture setting and see if that helps with the flickering.

Thanks again PFC5,
I had open the back of the TV and it seems to be everything OK. It has a little dust, which i will clean and i'm thinking maybe to buy another Power Supply. Like u mentioned, i had lowered the Contrast and Picture Settings but it does the same flickering. I'm guessing on the Power Supply. I then let u know after i changed it. Bye! |

Hey PFC5,
I suppose it may be the Board because i forgot to mention the fact that when the flickering is happening, the image almost seems like a Negative (like in Photos). I'm just not willing to put the TV on a Repair Service when i don't have a clue of the real cause of the problem, and so having to pay a lot of money (being robbed) for something (probably) so easy to fix. Thank u very much. I would like to hear your opinion. |

If the picture turns to a negative image when it flickers it could be a video processing board, but again only guessing here. Try calling Philips tech support (not customer service) and ask them as this might be a know issue.
Good luck!

Before changing parts yourself, I would suggest the same solution with PFC5,i.e. calling philips local tech support. If your unit is within guarantee period then i think that there would not be a related cost.(but you can ask in order to be sure.)
I just made a call for this type of model in Philips Tech support (Greece), they told me that for this kind of proplem they cannot provide a simple answer by phone and that they should take it in to have a look/check. I asked if there would be a related cost for examining the tv.They told me that if it is within guarantee period, no cost apply. If the guarantee has expired then they prepare a budget for the cost repair, that is communicated to the customer prior to performing the repair. If the customer does not wish to perform the repair (too costly i.e. ,etc) again there is no charge till this step. They said that there would be a charge only if the customer wished the tv to be shipped back to him by Philips. If the customer picks up the tv himself no cost would apply. I assume that same also counts for taking the tv to the philips service in the first place. As Philips is an international Company, i assume that above would apply also for you. Bottom line call your local tech support. They will define this for you. (I used once Philips local service (Greece) for a defective hifi remote control under guarantee, and they replaced it with no charge whatsoever). The only thing was that i had to drive till there, but in Greece distances are much smaller.. |

I've found Philips Support to be good and they usually have appointed repair agents in your area they they will refer you to.
Just select your country at the top here: http://www.usa.philips.com/ Click Consumer Products and then the Contact & Support tab.

I'm guessing Phillips tech. support will read from a script telling you to adjust the constrast, brightness, replace the HDMI cable, unplug the TV, wait 30 seconds, plug the TV back in. After all that they'll suggest a tech. comes out to look at it. They won't give you in depth help over the phone about replacing components inside the TV. Even people here saying - could be the video processing board, could be the power supply are just guesses.
