I know Newegg's ToS state that they do not pay for return shipping (even on defective items), but I'm assuming they made an exception because they emailed me a return shipping label. They also emailed me an RMA number with a note that says restocking fees have been waived.

I will be really happy if they give me a full refund (and free return shipping) on this defective Toshiba.

This new Panasonic really blows the Toshiba away. Better speakers, no buzzing, and (in my opinion) better picture.
I have no doubt based on this last info that the display was defective.

Glad that NewEgg took care of you properly. I avoid buying displays from them because of their lousy return policy on them, but buy computer components from them all the time.

I compared these two models and thought the Toshiba beat the Panasonic LCD in black levels, viewing angles, and over PQ as well once I adjusted both to the best they could be in the store. Toshiba has always seemed to have poor sound quality on their TVs going back to their tube TVs.

Just an FYI. You should try to keep LCD backlight levels as low as possible for the given brightness in a room and increase the contrast/picture setting to compensate so that you can get the best black levels (and hence least washed out overall PQ).

I recommend you get a calibration disc so that you can dial in the PQ the best you can.

Glad you have resolution and can enjoy your new toy.

Panasonic uses a "P" before the screen size that is part of the model number and an "L" for their LCD models.

Damn me for missing the obvious.

Anyhow I can't say I've noticed POOR sound on Toshiba TVs since I don't use the TV sound. I never have, well, as of late I'm using the stock speakers on the 46hm95 simply because I'm in the process of installing flooring and it's too much hassle at present to hook up my receiver, except to my PC. Sound is NOT a feature I look for in a TV since even your cheap receivers are likely a fast improvement. I'd be pleased as punch to not have speakers at all on a TV since it would cut on the size making room for more screen.

No clue what was up with this Toshiba, other than I'm suspecting a lamp ballast, and for whatever reason it was picking up on the noise on the AC line. Very likely a defective unit that passed quality control.

Thanks for your input everyone. Glad to have this resolved.

I'll try to update this thread after I return the TV to Newegg. I'll share my experience with Newegg customer service, as I was worried about their return policy as well.

Just for the record, in case other people hit this problem, there are postings elsewhere on the web about the buzzing problem - not many to be fair - but it was probably nothing to do with your electrics in the house and the same could well apply to other people.

I would like to add that Newegg paid the return shipping, received it today, inspected it today, and already approved my RMA.

Even though I was shipped a defective buzzing TV (not their fault), they took care of me by arranging the RMA, paying to have it sent back, and initiating a refund all in less than a week. A great experience all around.

I guess I don't really know until the full credit appears on my CC statement, but I have faith in the Egg!
