Default Better 32 inch LCD: Samsung ln32b640 vs Sony Bravia??

Hello all, new to the lcd world and would love some suggestions. I've narrowed it down to a samsung 32 inch lcd(I believe it's the model shown in the thread title) and a sony bravia. Which would you get? I'm also open to other models if you think they'd be better.

Lot's of movies(blu-ray), lot's of hdtv(sports), lot's of gaming(ps3, xbox)

1. How far away will you be from the display when watching it? (Be as exact as possible. A 5' range difference IS a major difference) 6-10 ft(tv) 3-6ft(gaming)

2. What TV will it be replacing (i.e. 27" tube TV, etc) moving a 42inch toshiba dlp to another room

3. What will you be watching on it (i.e. 1/3 movies, 1/3 TV shows, 1/6 Sports, 1/6 gaming console, etc) 1/4 movies, 1/4 tv shows, 1/4 sports(important), 1/4 gaming(important)

4. Will a computer be connected to use the display as a monitor? If so, what percent of the time? Possibly, but if so not very much(not important)

5. Will you be getting a Blu-ray player to watch movies and will you be getting any HD service from cable/sat, or will you just be watching SD programming, and upscaling SD DVD player? HD cable, ps3/blu-ray

6. Are you looking for the best in class display, the best bargain display, or best bang for the buck in the middle display? middle display(although more so best in class)

7. What is the room lighting situation? (i.e. can you control the lighting? Can you use light blocking blinds, etc to control it?) Controlled lighting, not gonna be bright at all, dim lighting.

8. What is your budget range $500-$800 +/-

Thanks for any suggestions.

Forget the contrast ratio, and what they look like in the store. Unless you were able to mess with the settings who knows what they could have been set at. I would choose the Samsung over the Sony, and although I have no experience with them Toshibas are seeming to outscore both of those sets according to many here on the forum. I would look into them.

Thanks, beef. You know I was just browsing the forums(which I guess i should of done before I post, lol) and I've noticed that a lot of people are liking Toshiba. Especially the 32 inch range I'm looking for. I just want to make sure I get the best, if Im gonna spend some money, I might as well spend enough to get what I want.

Yeah Toshibas tend to be well priced as well. It also needs to meet your needs. What exactly is your situation? There is a sticky at the top of the Flat Panels forum with a list of questions. Answering some of those could also help us give you more info.

This forum (including myself) is also very partial to Panasonic plasmas. And a 42" would fit your price range and fit your viewing distance even better. Plasma will provide a much better gaming experience and a much better sports viewing experience. As long as the room isn't overly bright plasma will most likely be the best choice.

The one from Newegg is the better of the three a little more expensive than you might be able to spend, but worth looking at.

Go with Toshiba Lcd right now. I just bought a 52 inch and I love it!! Panny is the BEST plasma right now!! Samsung came in 2nd with me but, I am not fond of Korean made products (but they have come a long way). Sony is OVERPRICED!!

Why would you recommend sticking with LCD when plasma is the far superior technology and fits his needs better?

Well, I heard that plasmas aren't as good for gaming, for some reason or another. I emphasis "heard" because i have know idea if it's reliable info. But on top of that, I really want a 32 inch, at the VERY most, a 37 inch, but again, really a 32 and you can't get plasmas in that small of size can you?

If you can still find a Vizio you can. They made a 32" plasma that looks quite good but they have quit manufacturing them. There are some still available though.
