Cool The trade-off: 40" FullHD LCD vs 42" HDready Plasma

Hi, i am curious whether anyone can help me with the choice between two tv's, or two tv types?

My dilemma is, 40" FullHD LCD or a 42" HDready Plasma? What would you guys prefer and on what does it depend?

I am tempted by the "FullHD" of the title of the LCD, cos that makes it kinda future-proof (as 1080p broadcasting comes and Bluray becomes more available).

On the other hand, the plasma has a wider viewing angle. And I am a little confused about PQ, I know that IN GENERAL plasma has a better PQ because of deeper blacks and less blur, but is that also true when comparing a FullHD LCD vs a HDready Plasma?

My use will be primarily as a computer screen hooked up to my MacBook Pro, and watching a 720p hd tv-channel.

thanks a bunch!

Go with the plasma. Which LCD and which plasma are you looking at? My guess is you can get a "full HD" plasma (which will look way better than any LCD) for less than the LCD your are considering.

I'm sorry. I didn't notice that you said it will primarily be used as a computer monitor. In which case plasma is not the right choice for you. However if you really only plan to use it to watch videos or movies through your computer it shouldn't be problem. If you are going to be using it for general computing plasma is not the right choice.

What is the models of the 2 in question and what will be you average videwing distance?

Since your primary use of the TV will be for a computer monitor, I would most likely recommend the LCD vs plasma.

Thanks a lot! I already suspected that LCD is more suitable.

My viewing distance is 3 meters (10 feet or 120 inches). I read somewhere that viewing distance for TV is 4x-6x the diagonal size of the tv, whereas if used as a computer screen, optimal viewing distance is around 2.5x, is that correct?

the models are:
42" plasma: LG 42PQ1100 or PANASONIC TH-42PA60
40" LCD: SONY KDL-40V3000AEP or PHILIPS 42PFL7662D

any opinions are welcome! thnaks

Forget about plasma for your computer screen, and stay away from LG aka GoldStar!

As primarily a computer screen you should definitely get an LCD.

At your viewing distance you would be looking for something as close to 58" as you can get IMO. Your numbers are incorrect for screen size/distance ratio. To fully resolve the resolution you would be looking at a 1.5:1 ratio for HD material as optimum. I generally use 2.0:1 as most people will be also watching SD material with their HDTVs also though. It it is mostly/all SD material I would say 2.5-3.0:1 is best.

Hope this helps!
