Default problem with my plasma or just me ?

Guys - I just got a new Samsung PN42B450. I am noticing kind of a drop shadow especially with lighter text on a dark background. It is quite visible when I pull up my cable's TV Guide on the screen. I tried calibrating it by adjusting tint, brightness, contrast etc. but it doesn't seem to completely disappear. It is also very noticable in the text that appears on TV.

I am new at the HD game and need to know if I need to set my tv up properly or if it's defective so I can return it. I sit 10+ feet from it and the lighting conditions in my living room are low to moderate.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are seeing the (IM) Image Retention of the white text on a dark background. Samsung seems to be more susceptible to this than Panasonic or Pioneer plasmas, but not as much as the LG plasmas which show up almost immediately from what I have seen. What do you have your contrast setting at?

You should calibrate the picture settings with a calibration disc to make sure you do not have the contrast set too high, as this will make it happen more.

Hope this helps & welcome to the forum!

Thanks for replying. My current contrast is 54. Here are other settings, just in case

Mode - Standard
Cell Light - 6
Contrast - 54
Brightness - 62
Sharpness - 29
Color - 46
G/R - G52 - R48

Also in Advanced Settings, I have turned Black Tone to Dark and Dynamic Contrast to off.

I would recommend setting the contrast to 50 or below and turn the sharpness down to 0.

I would turn the black tone to light and THEN turn the contrast and brightness down as L2W suggests. You will likely not need them (particularly the brightness) that high with the black tone changed.

Thank you guys. I did just that but the problem remains. I am just not sure why is it only more visible with text especially with channels like ESPN HD where most of the stuff in ticker and left bar is text. I was streaming hi def video on my without any problem or is it that it becomes more visible with light on dark background. Is there a website that would tell me optimal settings for this set.

Or could it be a plasma problem. I just switched over from a 26'' Sharp LCD and maybe I didn't notice it there because of the small size.

Do you suggest I return it.

This is one reason why I prefer Panasonic plasmas. The IR is minimal even when first used and goes away for the most part completely after a few hundred hours on the display. LG is worse than Samsung with this, but Samsung is worse with this compared to Panasonic plasmas where it is almost a non-existent issue.

What they said, there's not much difference between the G10 and G15. The G15 is a little more sexy looking, it you want to save a little go G10. The Panasonic Plasmas has a nice anti-image retention technology built into the G10 and G15's.

Thank you guys. I looked into these. They are slightly over my budget. I am looking for somewhere to spend between $800-$900. Do you think there is a good product within that price range, 40'' to 42''.

You could look at the TC-P42S1

You could even get a 50" 1080p Panasonic plasma for $100.00 more than your current budget at $998.00:

I ended up buying a 42'' LCD B630 from Bestbuy. When I hooked that up last night I noticed I have been connecting my cable HD box to the TV by component cable. I switched to HDMI and voila! Amazingly good quality. Just wished I had thought of that when I had plasma because it was showing everything great i.e. movies games; the biggest problem was with cable.

Anyway, just an FYI, in case anyone has a similar problem like mine.

If your into calibrating your display to get the most out of it, get Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark Blu-ray Disc $25.
