So I just bought a 3D TV and 3D LG Blu Ray player, model BPM53--got the player at Wal Mart.

I have all of my HD components (Directv, Apple TV, Xbox, and new blu ray players) plugged in to my TV and then an optical audio cable going from my TV to my stereo (a 5 year old yamaha).

All of the inputs produce 5-channel surround sound through my home theater but not my LG Blu ray player. Does it have something to do with having HDMI cables and also using a digital audio cable?

Please help!!

*****I exchanged the LG for a samsung and have the same issue. Note: the Samsung also has an optical audio output. So I have a cable running from the Samsung to the stereo and using that method, 5.1 sound works fine. I do end up pushing the "DVD" button on the stereo. But when I switch the stereo button back to TV, the sound goes back to 2-channel.

i want letterboxing

I have a Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV that I bought in Sept 2009. At the same time, I needed a blu ray player and decided to get a PS3. While I have been happy with the picture quality, one thing has been nagging me. I don't seem to ever see letterboxing anymore.

I've always been someone who prefers widescreen DVDs, to assure that I was seeing the full image of the movie. I absolutely hated the popularity of Standard DVDs.

I know my tv is a widescreen TV but that's 16x9. That might be fine for HD television shows, but not for movies. The movie image still gets chopped off a little in most cases.

I've tried messing around with the settings of both my TV and my PS3, but I can't seem to get letterboxing to appear on my TV. Is this because of my PS3? Should I buy a blu ray player instead? Will it give me more control over the image I see on my TV? If so, any recommendations on what I should look for in a blu ray disc player? Is there a feature I need to look for that will assure I can force letterboxing?

I want to see letterboxing every time so that I know I am seeing the full image.
