Hello, I posted a few months ago on this forum about my tivo dying. At the time I wanted to upgrade to HD, but have decided to wait a little while longer due to some personal things going on - mainly because I don't want to lock into another 2 year agreement until things settle down in my personal life.

Anyway - when I signed up for DirecTV ages ago (over 5 yrs), I got the TiVo box and a couple of standard boxes.

The TiVo died about 2 months ago. I realized I have another box with access card sitting in my office that's never been used. I'm dying without television in the living room!

I have heard horror stories about DirecTV extending contracts for any changes to equipment, so I am fearing that they'll extend me if I call to get this receiver/card activated. But...I already own it, and it is mine - all mine - since I obtained it before their lease-days.

Can anyone tell me (A) will they extend my contract for activating this other receiver/card and (B) how the heck I will even know if they do extend me, since it seems like they don't send you anything to confirm the contract extension nor require a signature, and I hate to rely on the "good word" of some call center worker who conveniently forgets to document our discussion in my file.

Thank you, I appreciate the forum's help!

Angie

I currently have dish but I am evaluating a switch to DirecTV before baseball season (which is not until April). Dish does not carry MLB Network, while DirecTV does.

My questions involve local channels. Are DirecTV subscribers required to subscribe to local channels. Locals are advertised as "free" in each package, but I'm wondering DirecTV lowers the price of each package without them. Currently with Dish, I save about $5/month by not subscribing to locals. I have an excellent antenna system that receives many more broadcast channels than satellite or cable offers (out-of-market channels, subchannels, some HD channels satellite does not offer in HD).

My second question is about the AM21 OTA tuner for DirecTV receivers. I don't see anything advertised about it on DirecTV's website. I don't believe the HD DVR has an ATSC tuner built-in like my Dish 722 receiver does. Currently with Dish, I'm able to record OTA on my Dish DVR. Is the AM21, or some other DirecTV OTA tuner still available?

Thanks in advance!

1stCalled Directv 13 November to report loss of satellite signal. Bad weather over the past two days apparently did in my system even though I had excellent reception over the height of the storm. After three phoncalls (Lost connection? two times) finally connected with a rep named "Russell" who agreed a service call was required and scheduled for 16 NOVEMBER between 8:00 and 12:00am. On 15 NOVEMBER I received a voice mail stating that I was scheduled for a service call on 23 November. During phonecall with "Rachel" on the 15th of November she stated that the service call was moved from the 16th to the 23rd but didn't know why as there were no "notes" She stated that she could schedule a 18 NOVEMBER service call but I wanted the 16th as originally scheduled. After contined discussion I finally agreed to an 18 NOVEMBER service call but she then told me that she said it was no longer available. I could either cancel my contract for $400 ( I've been with Directv for over 10 years, what they call a LOYAL CUSTOMER) or wait a week for the service call. Needless to say I am not happy about waiting a week for TV service After 12 years of high frequency receiver repair (100mhz to 30GHz) I know that the Slimline Antenna is the problem. Where can I get a LNB assembly for the AU9-S dish in Virginia?

How do I get updated equipment from DirecTV without incurring huge charges? I have an HR20-700 DVR and would love one of the new black DVRs. Also, I'm about to install a new HD TV to replace an older tube TV and will need an HD receiver for the standard receiver I have there. If I look at the web site, they're going to want $300 from me for the two receivers. However, since I've been a customer for two years and my DVR makes some rather strange crackling noises if it is moved, how can I get them to give me the equipment for free or the equivalent? Just be a pain in their butt until they agree to it?
