If you enjoy the series, I highly recommend this episode BTW. David Tennant as the Doc. Michelle Ryan as his side-kick--Very easy on the eyes. One hour long. Great PQ/ good SQ. We use Netflix.

What would be the best kind of TV for a kitchen counter. Something around 19". I'm not asking what is the best of the best set, more like which technology for the a clean, sharp picture. I'll be supplying it with a digital cable signal without a cable box of any sort. Actually my parents will be, it's for them. My mother unknowingly brought home a small Vizio HDTV for around $200 that didn't have a good, clean picture. I told her that a non-hd signal on a HDTV is not going to look good.

I browsed through some sets at WM and all the small sets are HDTV's. What should I be looking for (or to do) in this situation.

Thanks.

Ok after years of viewing HD I have a few questions about resolutions. I have two 720p HD tv's. A plasma and lcd. The plasma has a native res of 768P, which I believe is the same as 720P basically. Although in the tv's manual it says the tv is capable of 480i,480p,720p, and 1080i. So thats everything but full 1080p. I keep my sat reciever, 360, and PS3 set to output 1080i on this tv. I swear I can see just a spec more sharpness at 1080i opposed to 720p???!!!My eyes have gotten pretty sensitive to the slightest details. Although some argue you should set the devices to the tv's native resolutuin of 720p, although I am not sure why? 1080i seems to be more lines of resolution, hence a higher level of detail in the picture? Although it is interlaced, I cant tell the difference between interlacing and progressive it happens so fast.

As for the lcd tv. It is a new Samsung 720p. I don't think it can do the 1080i can it? The reason I ask is that I have a Toshiba upscaling dvd player hooked up to it. As we lost the remote the dvd player is clearly set to output 1080i. I cant change this setting without the remote. It is connected via componet cables. The picture looks good, the tv's internal display info shows it is recieving 720X480.

So I guess my biggest question is when I buy a third HDTV, why get a 1080p? What am I going to see that I am not already? Like I said I can only see a spec of difference between 1080i HD and 720p, so it seems I wont be able to see a difference with a 1080p set! My next set will likely be a 40" lcd or 42" plasma ( I really lean toward the plasma). At this size I dont think 1080p makes much of a difference. If so how? I do know that 1080p will cost a premium in these sizes! The deals are to be had with the 720p sets. Your thoughts?

With paypal I can order my T.V. from either site and pick it up in Point Roberts.
The price seems good but I wonder if it isn't worth the extra $100 (approx) + the sales tax to get a store warranty.
Any first hand experiences with these, or any eStore for that matter?

When we did our reno we ran copper all through the house. Now I need to plan what to buy and install, and when as we have some budgetary constraints so we may have to use a phased approach. Any guidance on how to plan it (define requirements, what to look at for each, how to evaluate, etc.)? Any books or other sources?

What I'm looking for is a complete, multi-floor system. Has to accommodate gaming (both single/multi-user in-house and internet), audio, video, web surfing, etc. I'm thinking central music/video library, streaming audio & video capabilities, etc. A key requirement is user interface so my wife can use it as well. No slur on the women reading this - my wife will be the first to admit she is NOT a gadget person and I don't want her to have to depend on me to work the system.

Right now each room has at least 1 wall jack for our internet connection (wireless is too slow for gaming), plus the main floor has wiring for speakers in the living room, dining room, kitchen and rear deck. The top floor has wiring for speakers in the to-become-home-theater-room (which has a space left on one wall for a 55" flat screen), and this is also connected to the central/control point in the living room. We currently have a decent 32' flat screen and a new PVR to use in the new system. The rest will be new.

Any guidance will be appreciated.

TIA - R.

Hey there,

This place looks like an awesome forum!

I've got a peculiar problem. I'm a marketing guy at work, and I'm supposed to debut a new videocamera technology at a big tradeshow next month. We need to send a video signal to a large display so people walking by can watch the videofeed. I need your folks help figuring out what TV to buy and what to do.

The engineers who are building the videocamera thing tell me this.

-The output from the camera is 400 pixels by 400 pixels square.
-The converter box will take that 400x400 digital signal and slap it into analog NTSC format, and leave black bars on the bottom and side.
-The image will be on the top left, leaving approximately 80 black scanlines on the bottom of the screen and some number of vertical lines on the right.
- We will use composite video input.

We will be mechanically cropping the image by installing the flatscreen in a cabinet. That way only the videofeed image will be viewable and the blank space on the screen will be hidden. That's our plan right now.

My questions are:

- Do any TVs enable you to zoom in on one portion of the image so we can do less cropping?
- Do any flatscreens automatically detect black space and fill the screen with the image?
- Do any flat screens come in a 4:3 aspect ratio, so we get more image on the screen?

We need at least a 20" x 20" image, which by my calculations means we need at least a 38" screen. Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap, lightweight 38" flatscreen that might fit the bill?

Any other ideas?
