Default Add-on Hard Drive activation charge rip-off

What's up with Dish Network charging almost $40 to 'activate' an external hard drive that you own and want to plug into your receiver? Directv doesn't seem to have any charge for doing this. Why does Dish insist on ripping off the customer?

Oh, did you write your own code that made your cable box recognize the external drive? And do you pay the people who work at DISH network customer service who answer questions from people who call about their external drives?

They charge those who want the service instead of hiding the fee and making everyone pay for it whether they plan to use it or not.

It's a one time charge and if you amortize it over 3+years it is less than 3 cents a day and gets smaller as time goes by.

They don't. But, you can substitute an external SATA drive for the internal one in their newer HD DVRs.

One doesn't have to work for them to disagree with your screed about the fee. Sarcastic humor seemed appropriate here.

The guy disagrees with you & that makes him biased?!?

You "ignore" him because he disagrees with you one time~

Nice... @ that rate, you should have everyone on "ignore" by the end of the month.

I will assume that I am now on your ignore list too, and thank you in advance!

While it is a bit sarcastic, the reply by djmattyb is right on target. There are all sorts of features in STB's (Cable & Satellite) that don't function completely because the providers do not want to provide the customer support. And I understand that-- it is very expensive.

I think it is good these features are made available even on a fee basis. I wish my cable company would support networking all three of my Moto cable boxes so I could watch ANY recording in any room-- the hardware has had the capability for years.

Default It'd be nice

It would be nice to have the external HD capability for free. What can you say, they are a company in business to make a profit. even though they don't distribute it to their shareholders in the form of a dividend. If you have a 211 and buy the external HD, its a great deal so you don't have to pay a 5.98 dvr fee every month. pays for itself in a short time and you can build your own library of movies with multiple external hd's . just beware the evil digital rights management on premium channels.

Does anyone know if they have made the 222 receiver available for external HD?
I heard last year that they were working on it, but haven't heard anything since.

At least it's just a one time fee. It works well moving my drive back and forth between receivers, etc. if I need to.

Hopefully we don't get new threads on every little fee we have to pay every month.

Not sure Dish is still persuing EHD for 222, that would make it too similar to the 722 with no DVR fees.
