Default help! unhooked my cable and can't get back...

Well, I'm re-siding my house so I had to unhook my receiver. Guys, please pardon my vocabulary as I will certainly mess up some of the words.

The fitting/connector on the end of the cable wouldn't allow the cable to fit through the hole in the side of the house so I had to cut it off....its difficult to re-use that fitting now as I cannot get the old pieces of cable out of it-they are stuck up inside the fitting. I spliced the cable down to the main copper wire and put it into the splitter but the receiver/DISH still won't connect. I just get the prompt on the screen that its looking...0 of 5 is all I get. I figure it must have something to do w/ the connector I unhooked/cut.

Does this make any sense? I have no TV now and am hoping someone can help. thanks

It sounds like your splicing of the RG6 coax is not correct. You need to make sure the strip the outter coating enough so both the inner and outer wire/foil connections are exposed and make the proper fit/connection to connector. You may be better off getting a coax stripper/crimper to do the job correctly at Radio Shack for like $15..

Additionally, if you spliced in a new piece of coax and it is not "3.0gHz rated", you may loose some or all of your receiving capability.

I remember when they first installed mine, they were using existing coax from inside the apartment, and on the bedroom run, there was a splitter between the bedrooms, and it wouldn't work with the splitter in the line. Once the splitter was removed, and it was just a single home run cable shot, it worked fine.

Bottom line, you WILL need to get the correct termination tool/crimper and attach the connector correctly. Either that, or reem out the opening in your wall so that the connector fits through, and buy a pre-terminated length of co-ax & replace that entire run~

I may be looking at this all wrong but...
Your description makes it sound as if you are trying to connect the cable to the splitter without using a cable connector. The single heavy copper center conductor does go into the center hole on the splitter connection but the metallic sheath that is just under the outer covering of the cable must make contact with the outer (threaded) portion of the connector on the splitter. I don't think you can make this work well without a proper cable connector on the end of the cable. The cable is easy to strip properly with a knife so you don't have to buy a cable stripper if this is the only time you will ever need to do this. You can buy a connector at Radio Shack or Home Depot and the package usually has a diagram showing how to strip the cable.
