Default Forcing Tuner Selection for DVR

I have the VIP622 HD box. I've had it for years and never been able to figure out how to force it to a specific tuner when scheduling something to record. I can set a TV1 or TV2 global preference, and I can force a choice if I wait in front of the TV for the show to actually start and press the "Record" button manually. What I can't do is schedule something in advance and tell it which receiver to use ahead of time. This leads to major annoyance and clunky workarounds that are far from satisfying.

Does anybody know if it's possible to get the thing to do what I want? Firmware update, maybe?

Additionally, does anybody know how to manually change the tuner seamlessly in the middle of a show? Right now it's a stop-and-restart affair that splits the show into two entries.

Why do you care what tuner is used to record a show?

We have the single tuner diplexed so that TV2 is the bedroom TV. Depending on the time of day, we watch one TV leaving the other "free" to record. The way it is now if I set the default to TV1, it will try to record everything in the living room and prevent the kids from changing channels during the day. Similar problem for us in the bedroom at night if I switch the default to TV2.

Sounds like it's time to get another tuner for the second TV.

Default Depends...

I think a lot depends on HOW you have the 622 hooked up...

In my case, I only have ONE HD set and one SD set. I have a 622 on the HD set and an older "whatever" box, (not sure of the #) on the SD set.

Now, since I only have the one HD set on the 622 (one TV ONLY on the 622 actually), tuner selection isn't really ever an issue with me, unless I am recording multiple shows @ the same time.

I can actually be recording 3 different HD sources @ the same time: Tuner1, tuner2, and OTA.

Depending on what I'm doing, I either use the "Recall" button to bounce from one program to another, or the "Swap" button to do the same thing.

Recall bounces you between two different programs on the same tuner. Swap bounces you between two programs on DIFFERENT tuners.

The only time that I run into an "issue" is when I am already recording two programs, and I want to watch a 3rd that is NOT on an OTA channel. Then I will get that message about stopping a recording in progress~

Hope that helps... Perhaps you should post what YOUR specific configuration is so others can give you better advice~

I have a single tuner set up in 'Dual Mode'. TV1 goes to the main TV via HDMI and TV2 goes to another room via coax. TV2 is SD only. I can record three things at once as well - TV1, TV2, and OTA - but I cannot swap what tuner is visible on each TV - the 'Swap' button does nothing. TV2 can't see the OTA channels, either. AFAIK, these are normal characteristics for Dual Mode.

Put the receiver in Dual mode with record plus on.

"When record plus is enabled, you can decide which receiver output (TV1 or TV2) will usually record your events as a default location." - from page 56 of 622 manual

Why then do they give them to us? Maybe to cut down the trees so more people can see the sats?

Yeah, i can do that. That sets the default. I'm wondering if anybody has figured out how to force a specific show to a given receiver when programming its timer.

I believe with record plus off, when you program a recording with the TV1 remote, it will record on TV1 output, and if you use the TV2 remote, it will record on the TV2 output.

It's what you look at to find out what you did wrong.

By the way, I think that record preference in the menu is the only option for control.
