Default DVR Problem

After two years my 622 quit recording. Dish sent a replacement. After two months the replacement suddenly turned itself off and could not acquire signal. Dish sent another replacement. I received this on Tuesday. This DVR has been working ok until last night. It started the same problem as the last 622. It loses signal (the screen goes blank), the DVR turns itself off for 15 seconds, comes back on and goes through the 'acquiring signal' procedure. Last night and this morning it was able to acquire a signal. Now it appears the DVR is having problems acquiring signal and has started the process of turning itself off and re-trying over and over. Dish tech is coming to my house on Monday.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Sounds like your dish may need realignment.

Would needing a dish alignment cause the receiver to reboot?

I unplugged the dvr for a few hours. It is now back on. My dvr is in a well ventilated area but it seemed the left side was quite warmer than the right side (this is facing the front of the receiver). The right side was cool to the touch. Could this be a heat problem?

Very well may be a heat problem.

I have a low speed case fan pulling the hot air out of the left side of my 622.

Press MENU-6-3-counters and page down about 7 times. This shows your HDD temps. Should be below 130. Although not the actual temp on the MB it is a general statement about the temp inside the unit.

My HDD High temp is 122, low is 100, ave 113.

That too. You want to make sure the Dish receiver is in the open or well ventilated with a fan as noted above.

Thanks for all your comments! I suspect it is a heat related problem but not sure. I turned the DVR on a little ago and it ran fine for 10 minutes before going off. It will not reset. Dish service will be here tomorrow. I assume they will come with a replacement unit? I have been a loyal customer and have no complaints with Dish service until now. Regarding the DVR running hot, I should not have to purchase additional fans, etc. in order to make the unit work properly. I am ticked tonight.

jim5506 i s quite knowledgeable (despite being a TTech fan). Check those temps and also your ground wire.

I took my 622 apart to take a peek under the hood.

The right side opening has a small duct with a fan that pulls air from the right side and blows it across the hard drive.

The hard drive is located in the center/front of the unit and elevated in a separate bracket.

The left side is were the power comes in and is converted to DC. Lots of thingamijigs and doohickeys on the left side.

Does your fan work...when you plug it in or hold the power button down (3 to 5 seconds)...can you hear the fan ramp up to high speed?

Dish service has come and gone. After checking cables, etc. he removed my D1000.2 and installed a D500. He replaced my 622 receiver with a 722k. He indicated that since I was receiving HD locals on 61.5 dish I did not need sat. 129 with the 1000.2 dish. He said I would get a stronger signal for 110 and 119 with the D500 by eliminating 129. He said sometimes there is a conflict between 61.5 and 129 (I believe I have explained this correctly). Anyway, so far so good!

I now need to purchase an HDTV tuner for over the air channels as my rear projection CRT has an analog tuner. Any suggestions where to buy?

Your 722 has a digital tuner (just like your 622 did). All you need to do is connect an antenna to it.

Unlike the 622 there is not a connection on the back of the 722 for my DB8 antenna. I plan to connect directly to the TV but need a digital tuner or HDTV tuner. When my DVR was out I connected directly to the TV and was able to receive analog stations. They were not so good reception but I hope the digital stations will be better. When I ran the over the air antenna through the 622, the HD reception was outstanding. Any suggestion on a good HDTV tuner?

WOW very interesting because my 722 does have an antenna input/connection. Guess they're making different models now.

As for an external ATSC HD tuner I know Samsung and Sony both used to make one but I don't know about currently.

The 722K requires an MT2 module for OTA reception. If you have a 'K' after the model number, that's the problem.
You can have Dish send you one, it will run about $30.
The advantage, you will be able to record on 2 OTA channels simultaneously.

I believe only the 'K's are being shipped anymore.
