Default Why does the fan constently run on in HD DVR receivers?

Like the VIP 722 and 822 DVR's, I hear a motor constantly running inside them. How come?

Cooling fans, are your receivers in the open or are they confined to a small space?

Mine used to be in an entertainment center and ran alot. Now it's in the open and never runs. Especially if you have it in an EC near a flat screen TV, which creates alot of heat.

Small space. Is it seriously true that the reason the fans are loud are because of the temperature? How does it detect it?

Mine is loud because I have an Antec laptop cooler running 24/7 under it.
