DISH Network Expands High-Definition Package with Addition of VOOM Programming; Lineup Will Include 10 Original VOOM HD Channels

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 2005--EchoStar Communications Corporation (NasdaqISH) announced that its DISH Network(TM) satellite TV service will expand its high-definition television (HDTV) package by adding 10 original VOOM HD networks, expected to be available May 1, 2005. With the addition of these originals to its current slate of HD programming, DISH Network further establishes itself as the leader in high-definition TV.

The 10 VOOM HD networks will include RUSH HD, Gallery HD, Rave HD, Ultra HD, Equator HD, Monsters HD, Animania HD, Majestic HD, HD News and Guy TV HD. These networks will give viewers a high-def experience in such entertainment categories as science fiction, fashion, travel, music concerts and more.

"The addition of these original channels makes the DISH Network high definition package the best in the pay-TV industry," said Eric Sahl, vice president of programming for EchoStar. "With programming offering the finest clarity and resolution, customers enjoy a better TV watching experience."

Customers can sign a one-year agreement and receive six free months of HD programming with high-definition receivers in up to two rooms at no charge. For a limited time, those who sign up can also receive more than 180 standard definition channels for only $19.99 a month for the first three months, plus a free DVR upgrade, with next-day installation.

...but will we have to buy a new STB six months from now or whenever DN switches over to MPEG4?

I read that the card slot on the front might be used for the Mpeg4 update.

Default great news, but ...

Good job, E*. I will now be the envy of my D* friends. (I am hoping I won't need another dish or anything to get the new channels.)

Now, how about those NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC national feeds? Sure would be nice ... I live in an area where I can only get CBS OTA.

I live in an area where I don't get any DTV or HDTV OTA. Well OK that's not true . . the local Spanish channel is DTV. I would kill for OTA CBS HD.

Where'd u read this at, I called them and stopped in at two dealers and they wouldn't tell me jack! I just got the HDTV and have been looking to pull the trigger on an HD signal but dread staying with comcast (have ananlog cable with them) and fear the MPEG4 switch if I decide to go with sat.

I wonder how good are the Voom channels. From looking at Voom's online TV guide, they repeated programs quite a bit. When Dish gets local HD, I may make a switch, depending on its price of course.

I read the card thing on a forum somewhere recently. Doesn't mean it's true . . I'll go back thru my history and see if I can find it.

I remember a post like that somewhere too, but I think somebody replied that the upgrade requires a hardware update, not just a software update.
I've also read complaints from long time Dish Network subscribers that Dish leaves subscribers hanging as far as upgrades go, once they've commited. Any longtimers agree/disagree?
I don't want to subscribe to a HD service if six months from now I will need to purchase new equipment. Perhaps those who use the forum to sell their product could let us in on the secret? Pretty please!

i was DN customer for 4 years, i had hard time getting 811 receiver from them, i booted DN and got cable. i have tried VOOM also the number of HD channels Voom provide looks good on paper but the programs are repeated so many times and those channels are not good anyway to begin with, so people who want to get DN because HD added channels i can tell those channels don't worth much, untill programming contents change.
my major adavantage with local cable is free local channels (no antenna required) and free HD DVR. INHD1 and INHD2 is a plus too (INHD showing HD basketball playoffs from NBA TV) last night TNT HD and INHD have basketball game on (HD pacer vs celtics), NBA TV was free on DN for HD package customers.

Why not just upgrade to digital cable & try it out while the Sat stuff shakes out... would cost very little...

Turns out that the Voom box can do MPEG4 with a card slot upgrade.

Not that it matters now . .
