Default all HD audio feeds not created equal

It's a nice night for an HD sports fan, with a free NBA TV HD feed of Chicago and Washington, the Spurs and Nuggets on TNT HD and the Angels and Yanks on ESPN HD.

I run my audio through a Sony ES receiver; the NBA TV surround audio sounds great, and TNT's is terrific as usual, but ESPN really needs to pay more attention to its audio. For whatever reason, ESPN uses Circle Surround, whatever that is, and their audio is definitely several notches below NBA TV's and TNT's. It's very, very nice to see the other two committed to quality audio.

E* gets bashed a lot in these forums, and they deserve some of it, but as an NBA fan I thank them for having TNT HD this NBA playoff season, a great advantage for me over D*.

I thought circle surround was for radio broadcasts. plus, your reciever has to have it to decode it properly (I think). very strange indeed.

this link says it's backwards compatible with DPL and DPLII, and can produce 6.1 out of 2 channels...

I have SRS Circle Surround II on my AV receiver. I've watched the ESPN Sunday Night Football broadcasts with CSII, and it is awesome. It's way better than Dolby Pro Logic II; it just sounds more dynamic and spacious. It's NOT as good as Dolby Digital 5.1; the channel separation is superior on DD5.1. But I wouldn't rate it that far below it either.

Circle Surround II is supposed to be superior to DPLII, so perhaps a receiver that decodes it properly does make a big difference. That's just my two cents.
