Default Cannot watch Live during recording ViP722

New here to Dish & ViP722.
I've noticed several times that I cannot switch to another DishNet channel while watching a single recording in process.
Tonight I'm watching recorded playback of American Idol (KTVU/Fox in SF) -- I'm viewing Idol 20 minutes after Idol has started. I pause Idol, go to program guide mode, select MSNBC (want to watch political primary updates) and messages says I will need to stop recording Idol in order to watch MSNBC. There is no other program being recorded. I thought the ViP722 would allow one recording function and a second live or recording function.

Can anyone give me a fix for this issue?

There is a button on the box to switch to dual mode, but you lose PIP, I think, I'm not sure, I just got my 722 last week, but that's how it was with my old box.
And if you have 2 tv's, it will show which tv it's recording on, at that point if you wanna watch a live show on the tv that's recording you'll have to cancel, but you can press record (red button on remote) after cancelling and you can choose what tv to record it on.

Ok, if you are using the 722 for one TV only then you just need to switch your DVR to single mode and you will be able to watch live TV while recording on another channel. There should be a button on the front panel that says MODE...press it til the lights on the front panel only display single...if you plan on using the TV2 output and have it hooked up to another TV in another room, then you can go in to the menu and select preferences...there will be a tab there called RECORD PLUS(if that is what it is called on the 722...put it on TV2...this will allocate all you recordings to the TV2 tuner....but the person in the TV2 location will have to either have to watch what you are recording or watch a DVR event previously recorded.

If you are using an OTA antenna, you do know that you can record 3 things at once right? One on TV1, one on TV2, and one from the OTA

Arrow You should post what your exact setup is...

Let everyone know what your setup is... How many TV's, if they are or aren't HD, how many and what kind of receivers/DVR's. We know you have at least one 722 DVR, but telling us how many sets it is hooked up to will clue everyone in as to how they may have set you up initially...

It sounds like he is watching an OTA channel slightly delayed but still recording, and is trying to switch to another OTA channel - NO CAN DO there is only one OTA tuner. You should be able to use the menu to switch to any satellite channel, but not to an OTA channel.

Thanks for the feedback. I have created a signature that illustrates my setup.... A 2nd TV is in the kitchen. I'm using that TV to primarily watch recordings off the Vip722 in my living room.

I don't use PIP. Regarding me trying to watch an OTA channel in my original post.... I was trying to switch to a sat feed from MSNBC while watching KTVU local FOX off the Sat while American Idol was still recording.

I'll need to experiment with the suggestions about the front panel modes.

Im having a bit of trouble with my 722. I have 1 HD TV (panasonic CRT) and 1 SD in another room (Sony) I cant seem to record one show and be able to view something else. Of course, I would prefer to view anything on any channel on any TV, and still be able to record, but this is the order of priority:

1. HD, this TV wins no matter what. I would like to see anything while still being able to record. and vice versa, record anything and be able to change the channel without interrupting recording.

2. SD, this TV can be on hold, it can wait.

Im having trouble understanding the users manual, please provide your feedback! thanks!!!

Easiest way is to put receiver in single user mode (second tv watches same thing as first), or if you can add OTA (which goes to tv1 when in dual user mode), tv2 can be on it's own, tv1 can record from either sat or ota while watch live from the unrecording source.

You may want to get a second receiver for second tv and use 722 for tv1 only. You should also check: Menu, Preferences, Record Plus and see if you system enabled when in dual user mode.

I have my old 501 in a box I can use for the 2nd TV. I would have to see if this option works best, in the meantime, I will put the 722 in single mode and watch TV1 this way. And I do have OTA, I purchased an antenna to avoid the local channel charges. Its too bad DISH wont display the channels, it only says Digital Service for channels 2 thru 63 (local LA channels) thanks again, and if you have more suggestions, please let me know!

If you subscribe to the locals, you will get guide info for your ota and maybe some channels you can't pick up via the antenna.

Why does he need to set up in single mode. He can use dual mode and set every recording to TV2. ("tv2 can be on hold, it can wait").

Now he can change channels and also record OTA.

this above poster is correct, I ran into the same issue and the best fix is to get a generic free reciver, which would cost you $5 lease fee, but well worth it in long run...

now on my single 622 plasma, I can record 2 SD channels and watch 3rd HD OTA channel with no problem...Or any channel in the correct format of 1 HD and 2 SD shows

be patient, these recivers are the best in market and take a few to learn the ins and outs

If you reread the replys, OP is new to the receiver so options were given depending what he decides to do. Whether he may want to see about ota (which he does not have yet) or an additional receiver, or both since his original problem was recording two programs while trying to watch a third live program. He may want to set the receiver in single user mode or he may not. Not everyone uses the receivers in the same way.

true, but more = on your 622 you can record 3 hd channels at one time.
and watch a different HD program already recorded.
