Call a local Retailer. And, we'll check your receiver in the store for free. If you can reach your LNBF, we'll check it for free too!!!!

My mistake, I meant my post was in answer to post #8, not OP. Sorry for the confusion.

Tonight I'm watching recorded playback of American Idol (KTVU/Fox in SF) -- I'm viewing Idol 20 minutes after Idol has started. I pause Idol, go to program guide mode, select MSNBC (want to watch political primary updates) and messages says I will need to stop recording Idol in order to watch MSNBC. There is no other program being recorded. I thought the ViP722 would allow one recording function and a second live or recording function.

Can anyone give me a fix for this issue?
There is no fix except another receiver or using the second tuner on another tv. This is what the TIVO lawsuit was about. Therefore Dish has disabled being able to watch another channel while recording one channel.

WOW, I guess there is still that thing: no 1 answer! I was watching IDOL live and a recording was coming on, the 722 automatically changed the channel and we began to watch the live recording. So in order to watch live tv and a recording comes on, I should be able to remain in live tv, correct? In order to watch and record a separate channel, I need to be in Single mode with Record Plus default to 2nd tv, correct?

Let's see if this clarifies things a bit for you. The 722/622 has 3 tuners, 1 for OTA and 2 for sat. With that being said, you can only do one thing at a time on OTA while you can do 2 different things with sat. channels for a combination of 3 things. So if you are watching and recording OTA, it will have to be on the same channel, if on sat you could watch another while recording. That's in single mode. If you are in dual mode, the second TV always removes one of the sat options.

Did that help?

Yes, I guess I need to play around with my new 722 to really understand what you just said, it makes sense, 3 tuners with the flexibility on 2 and 3 but not OTA.

OK, until I figure out the "theory" of this 722 Player, can you provide detailed explanation for me? I ran into more trouble this weekend trying to make tweaks and modifications. In the beginning of the week, usually Sundays or Mondays, I go thru every channel and set up to record movies/shows for the entire week. I would like to be able to watch TV (any channel OTA and satellite) and not be interrupted by my scheduled recordings that I set up earlier in the week. Please advise, thank you!

Ok, I'll give it a whirl. I'm presuming the major differences between the 722 & 622 (which I have) are the hard drive space and the color of the box, and that the tuner operation is the same. If I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me.

Forgetting about single- and dual-modes for the moment, you have the following:

Two satellite tuners
One OTA tuner

That's a total of three tuners. With that, you can do one of the following:

1) watch OTA live, and record two satellite signals
2) watch one Satellite and record OTA and a different Satellite signal
3) Record any two signals, and watch a pre-recorded program from your DVR menu.

Far as I know, you are limited to recording two things at the same time, no matter how many you select or from what sources. There is a priority that you can set on each recording so that if there is a conflict, the machine will make the decision.

Dual mode complicates things a bit, because in it's simplest incarnation, you are essentially "splitting" the 722/622 into two devices, with one tuner dedicated to TV1 (plus OTA), and the other to TV2. There are options here, which I don't fully understand, because I work exclusively in Single Mode, so I get all three tuners to my one HDTV.

But in any case, you can't tune to more than two satellite signals at any one time. So, if you are in single mode, watching Sat channel "A", and wanting to record Sat channels "B" and "C", you will lose channel "A", unless you want to dump the recording of "B" or "C".

In Dual mode, if TV1 is set to record on TV1, you're limited to one satellite channel to watch AND record on TV1, plus the OTA tuner. You can set it to record to TV2, but then TV2 will switch over to the recording channel.

I hope this helps a bit. Take the time and really read the manual. It does help!

Viggen, thanks for breaking things down for me, and yes, I read the manual but now I am getting a better understanding of my 722. I think I will switch over to dual mode, record everything on TV2 and TV1 can watch whatever, whenever. TV2 will be the "step child" in the sense that if something starts recording, TV2 will have to see that recorded event or watch whatever has been previously recorded. Does it matter if the recorded events were set up in single mode? I do want to switch to dual mode.

Actually you can record three HD shows at the same time (TV1, TV2 and OTA) and at the same time Output1 and output2 can watch separate shows. Thats 5 streams at the same time on one box.

You are limited in what you can view live, in that if both Sat tuners are recording, you cannot watch another sat channel and if the OTA tuner is recording, you cannot watch another OTA show, unless you bypass the unit and use the OTA tuner on your TV.

I stand corrected, then! I tried it today. Interesting that I never noticed the antenna icon in the DVR menu for the OTA channel being recorded. Recorded OTA, an HD Sat, and an SD Sat channel, and watched an HD recording...

And when I tried to tune to a Sat channel I wasn't watching, I got the message telling me that that would cancel the recording...

Exactly what I was trying to convey. There are a limited number of tuners, and of they're occupied recording, they can't be used to watch something else...

Hi

So I want to re-ask the question... the explanations seem kind of vague and I apologize if this is a repeat... but:

I have two TVs, with one vip722 box hooked up to the HDTV... if both TV's are being watched (live TV), is it impossible to record another channel?

right now it is on Dual Mode with RecordPlus activated... it seems to be that you can only record two max shows and watch a PRE-recorded show...

PLEASE HELP! this seems like a huge handicap for DishNetwork....

Yes, unless you would try and record a channel coming from an antenna (OTA) and that would only work if no one was watching a OTA channel.

Correct unless you have an antenna hooked up for OTA channels.

What many do is use a second receiver for the secondary TV as it frees up a tuner in the 722 which gives you more watching/recording flexibility.

I had another question... here's a hypothetical situation:

(1) Show1 begins at 730PM (I will begin recording on TV1)
(2) Show2 begins at 800PM

then, can I start watching Show1 at 8PM and begin to record Show2 on the same TV?

i think this is really annoying that you can't watch live TV while recording something else on one TV
