Default Dish DVR noise Normal?

I just got setup with a new Dish HD DVR and the thing makes a loud (you can here it from 20 feet away)humming noise when it is off. Is this normal? Also the thing is putting out heat even off. My electric bill is going to go up! The HD box they put in the bedroom makes no noise at all. It is not a DVR though, just an HD reciever. Thanks

The noise is normal for dvr units because really do not turn off, they go to standby mode. I would not worry about your electric bill, it will not go up by all that much. Not much you can do if you want the unit to keep working properly. Make sure it is in a well ventilated area (specially around the vent holes) to keep down overheating (overheating will cause a lot of problems). Some of the noise could be caused if there is not a lot of clearence around the unit (echo off other items).

Holy crap! I just got a Vip722 today and the thing sounds like a 747 about to take off.

Buzzing transformer. Try putting something under the feet that absorbs vibration.

Default Power Down

Can't the thing be turned off until needed, just like a computer? Having the hard drive spinning constantly day and night seems a waste in terms of wear and energy.

Only way is to unplug when not in use, this method will require the receiver to aquire signal then download guide info before being able to view any programing. You do get use to the hum just like a refrigerator, microwaves and computers.
