I figured this would be the best forum for this thread.
Bought the Sony 34XS955, and have 3 weeks or so to decide if I want to keep it...also have DISH 811 HD receiver. HD channels come in awesome, although it depends on what's playing, of course... SD are really hit and miss. The local channels are really the worse and I'm very unhappy about that, althoug I'm trying to figure out configurations to improve the quality...as of yet have not tried antenna for HD locals...I'm near the beach and was told chances are would not get reception. The 811 DOES let me choose between 480i and 720p or 1080i in the set up menu, although I have no idea whether this affects reception. I thought the signal coming in was set. 1) What do you guys set the 811 receiver at..in the menu with respect to interlaced/progressive, etc. and does it make a difference. 2) was told to connect sd channes directly to cable input on TV but there's no cable OUT on the 811 receiver....not sure how to make that work...do I need a coax splitter? any advice with 811 HD receiver connections to a 34" HD 13:9 aspect ratio TV for optimal reception and picture quality is greatly appreciated. |

You should be able to set the 811 to 1080i and leave it alone.
No need for coax for sd channels. (like you say, there is no rf output). Does your new Sony 34XS955 have the built in tuner for ota? if so , hook up an antenna to the tv tuner as opposed to the 811. fred

Was misinformed by the sales tech when I ordered my 811,he told me that since my Hitatchi 50vs810 has an intergrated tuner, my set would use the dish in grabbing off air local signals. WRONG. I, purchased an indoor terk antenna which pulls down at least seven local H.D.channels,combinded with the five channels dish offers is'nt bad at all! Also worth noting is i believe dish is having audio problems with certain recivers off there optical 5.1. hookup.Changing my older digital marantz reciever with a newer harmon kardon corrected this. TERK has quality indoor antennas for around 40.00 --thanks, miamivice55

I do have a built in OTA tuner, and will try that. Sales reps at AV stores have been discouraging me saying I probably won't get reception because they've hooked up their best antenas to their TV's in their store and can't get anything...could be because I'm near the ocean in Marina Del Rey.
Other thing I'm realizing is that the 16:9 aspect ratio isn't all that practical, since in order to see a full image, the TV has to stretch the image that much wider making for a more deformed picture than stretching it on a larger 4:3 tube....of course, HDTV uses the 16:9 ratio, so all these points will be moot when everything goes HD and all cable companies get their acts together.....some how that day seems far, far away....... |

I've noticed that the sound through my 811 is a muffled and the volume lower than when going through my dvd player and previously with Voom's receiver. Connections are the same as I had with the Voom receiver, any one else notice this? |

I notice different sound 'levels' between dtv, big dish, and Dishnet, but I haven't noticed any muffling. The Sirius sat music sounds awesome cranked up.
