I am searching for a HiDef DVR solution for a Dish signal that does NOT require a landline. I want the schedule to be downloaded from satellite (like my 811 does now) or from a wireless Internet connection. Why? Because I am totally wireless and don't have a landline. I read somewhere that the 942 can use ethernet (wireless to Internet). But must I pay a $5 fee to Dish because I am NOT connected to a landline? I think I also read somewhere that the 921, if still available anywhere, is not ethernet capable. But does that mean that it gets the schedule from a phone line or from the satellite?
Where are you, Dish Tech? Help me out. |

All DN receivers get the guide info via sat. The phone line and ethernet connections are for other uses.

I nevery had a land line hooked up to my Dish receivers for the three years that I was with dish. The line is just for PPV orders. If you need to have the box call in, take it to your neighbors.

The line is also for accessing other material from news, to weather, and viewing/paying your bill, etc. etc. Of course, you can do similar things online.
To me the best feature of it is viewing incoming caller ID calls on the screen.

The 942 requires a phone connection to avoid the $5 dual receiver fee but the 921 doesn't. There's no ethernet port on the 942 or 921. The 921 has firewire and USB 1.0 while the 942 has USB 2.0 only. Those ports are intended for the portable dish players however the 921 does not software support for that.
