If you want to get Over The Air local high-def channels, you will need the optional OTA module - it actually slots inside the receiver. Apparently, not many folk connect an antenna to Dish receivers so they decided not to build the functionality into the receiver as a standard item - this way they get another $30 for the optional OTA module...
I've got it and it works very well.

Default Early review of the 922

I've had mine for a couple of days. All in all it is a better product with a lot of potential. Some bugs though:

Clicking on a show --> edit show --> delete just pops up a deleting screen... and it never goes away. You can hit guide to get out of it and the show is deleted. I've reported that to Dish.

The folders option for grouping recorded shows is ALMOST useful, not quite though. You can create custom groups like "Kid shows" and stuff all of your appropriate content into them. The problem is that once you have a folder the items in that folder won't group. So I have 30 episodes of Mickey Mouse listed. I've requested nested folders or grouping within a folder.

Everything is a "large icon" now. Although it is a nice addition taking away the list view was a big mistake. A lot of screen real estate is take up by huge icons.

This unit was supposed to replace a 722 for multi room. The installer didn't know this unit (apparently) isn't multi room. Though after experimenting with it, it appears that this functionality does exist and would work if I would have received another UHF or IR remote.

We have found no way to create a "pass" from the menus on the unit. This can be done from the website though.

The Sling iPhone app works "ok". They are close to having it work great by integrating with the dishnetwork remote access app. The problem is when you try to select a recorded show. It starts it on the TV and switches the live TV to the iPhone app! The happens because the "watch" button on the dishnetwork app starts the recording playing on TV1... even though the next button is "watch on iPhone." (The web interface does not have this problem.) You can use the traditional sling interface on the iPhone to get to the recorded shows though. It is just a bit more clunky.

I don't know if I have the wife sold on it yet but I'm wearing her down. She has slowly moved a way from the "send it back" stance... PROGRESS!

Glad you're having a good experience. Unfortunately my unit has a major problem now, you can't rewind the live feeds and recording has failed. Talked with Advanced Tech Support today, we think the hard drive is failing. Dish were very responsive though, shipping a new unit overnight as a replacement, so hopefully back in action tomorrow.
I agree with the Pais, that there's too much reliance on icons in the My Media interface - sometimes simple lists are much more effective. Hopefully, those improvements will come in time through software updates.

Mine definitely acted strange when recording tonight. Kept recording the same show into the next show and can't actually be "stopped".

--Update
I ended up with an 8 hour recording that couldn't be watched or deleted. I could only delete it after resetting the receiver

Default 922 external hard drive questions

1) Can you play recordings on your external hard drive like you can with other dish network external hard drive compatible receivers?
2) How do the show appear on the external hard drive, graphically like my recordings are same like other receiver one huge list?
3) On my recording do they integrate the shows on your external hard drive? When I login to dish remote access and select My DVR it gives me a nice graphical list of all shows I have recorded on DVR and external hard drive , this feature would be really nice on this receiver so I can see all my shows in one place and can play all my shows from one place?
4) Can you organize on external hard drive?
5) When moving recordings to the external hard drive is it transferring or backing up (so show remains on DVR but there is a backup on the external hard drive) If transferring I sure hope you can play shows on the external hard drive

They took away the agile modulated output for a 2nd TV I notice. That could still come in handy, and why still have the OTA tuner as a separate plug in module?
For the price they want all those features should be included.

Biggest turnoff for me is the $95 install, and they will not let you install yourself....of course, you can purchase one somewhere and install it.
They cut the install cost if you sign up for a service warranty for a few bucks a month...it always has to be some kind of 'catch'.

I'm in no hurry.
