If you're installing a second HD DVR, then you already have a hi-def dish.

Now I have an Optoma projector in another room that I project an 8 foot screen on a painted wall. I only have the standard D* receiver but now want to get an HD box since the Optoma will "accept" a 1080i signal....yes I realize it will just "downgrade" it to 480p(it's native rez) but that has got to be better than the crayon on waxpaper picture I get from the 480i or whatever the standard D* signal is!!! The built-in DVD on the projector is 480p and I am happy with the picture, see pixels in bright white areas but hey, it's an 8 foot screen I'm sitting 10 feet from!!! Other than that it's great!!

So, onto my question. What is my cheapest route to upgrade the receiver to HD in that room? I hate the thought of having to pay $99 just to get HD in that room but still pay $5/month for the leasing. Has anyone tried getting any free upgrades(as existing customer) from D* lately? I have been customer for 5 years and have had HD for two and NFL Ticket for three.
Yeah, they have become almost inflexible on pricing. I checked with them and was able to get $50 off on an additional HD receiver. But I declined the offer. Really don't want to pay anything for leased equipment. Lack of real competition hurts the market for consumers. If FIOS ever really takes off, DIRECTV will be in big trouble.

He put me on hold came back and said he could give me the HD(not DVR, which I didn't want) for the $99 but then would deduct $10 per month over the next year to make it a wash. I signed up and it's on it's way. Another happy customer...as I always have been.

FWIW he originally said the DVR upgrade for it's normal price of 199 and then 10 off per month but I really only wanted the HD receiver so it was a wash.
You better watch that, he might of lied to you just to get you to buy it. This is why..

I had my dish moved to the roof of my house because the dish was installed incorrectly the first time on a pole, not ground, nothing. I had to adjust the dish myself to get it to work for him to activate it. YEAH I KNOW! Anyway they said they would have to charge me the 50.00 for an upgrade charge but would credit me on my next bill the whole 50.00. I never saw that. i called back a few times and they just assumed I was lying and said to me that I was never told that.

So it took 6 months and still no refund. I would call back to make sure you weren't lied to. Some of the CSR's are dumber than dirt. If they sound like they don't know what they are talking about hang up and try again. Trust me, it isn't worth your time with those 11.00 an hour dumb asses

You can legally buy a dish from a satellite TV dealer and self install it if you want to. DIRECTV can't stop you.
