Default H10 HDMI blackout problem

If you have an H10 and have the blackout problem, be sure to call DirecTV if you havnt already. The first few times Ive called them, they stated they were very aware of the HDMI blackout problem. NOW, the last 5 times I called, The person says " oh really, I havnt heard of this problem" Obviously, this IS a HUGE problem for DirecTV and now theyve been instructed to plead ignorance and not admit to the problem. CALL DIRECTTV Advanced tech support and have them note your account. Since my account has 1 million entries, they allowed me to buy a NON-H10 replacement reciever and Ive been credited that amount.

If you want to replace your H10, you have to go with an HD reciever with a DVI output. I got the Hughes HTL-HD. I pray that this same problem isnt on the HTL because the H10 is made by Hughes. We shall see.

You may find it difficult to find a reciever other than the H10. I went to BestBuy and Circut City and they ONLY had the H10. You may have to go with an online retailer or Ebay. Do you research if you want to replace it. Some models I found on Ebay............

TOSHIBA DST-3000
Samsung SIR-TS160
RCA DTC210 RCA DTC-100
Hughes HTL-HD
Mitsubishi SR-HD5
Zenith HD-SAT520
PANASONIC TU-HDS20B
Sony SAT-HD100 or 300

The Directv H 10 receiver is made by Samsung,
not Hughes ...
At least thats where thew shipping label on the boxes I looked at said they came from....
The Directv HD-DVR comes from Hughes

Hmm, I thought the H10 that I saw in Circut City was marked as Hughes right on the reciever. I must be losing my mind.

Hmm,
Could it be that both companies are making the H-10 ???

I would really like to see a NEW receiver come out before football season, although very unlikely.

I really hate to have to buy the H-10, not sure if the older Samsung is any better., I think I will have to buy , due to lack of choice.

BTW, When I talked to the people at DTV Advanced Tech about the blackout issue, they said they use the same ones all day long and do not have trouble.
I mentioned the percentage of people saying they have trouble vs those without.

The solution they mentioned , they did admit to hearing about a few cases of trouble, was to use a CHEAPER HDMI cable, not the high dollar ones.......
Not sure why that would be an issue,
I still don't want to buy at that price, to find out that it will be having trouibles
I would really like the MPEG 4 stuff , so I don't have to eat the cost of the H-10 next year.

Default I've read that 3 companies make H10s...

I got the following info from another board so I can't vouch for its accuracy.

----------------
Samsung, RCA and Philips are contracted to make the H10, DIRECTV will place orders with one or more manufacturer.

No matter who manufacturers the H10 they will all be made to the same specifications.

I believe, the H10-100 is RCA Samsung is H10-200 and Philips is H10-300

Unhappy My experience the H10 Receiver

I have experienced the same problems with the H10 receiver: screen going black momentarily every 5 minutes or so, receiver resetting itself if a phone call comes through with number block, etc.. I also had a problem with momentary "herringbone" picture breakup on the right side of the screen when watching an HD channel, which occurred about once every 10 minutes... DTV sent me a replacement receiver, which has been installed for 2 days. I am still experiencing the screen going black problem, but it is not happening as often. It happened twice during an hour of viewing an SD channel yesterday afternoon, and only once during a 2+ hour timespan when I was watching a film on HDNet Movies last night. So there has been improvement, but it's not perfect yet. Replacement receiver was another H10-200 (Samsung), same as the original. The only difference between the two was that the first one was manufactured in Korea and the replacement was made in Indonesia! I am going to call the DTV HD Tech Support again and see if I can get another replacement. Maybe this time I will get a different brand....!

Not sure why that would be an issue,
Maybe because tehy dont want to get the blame for customers going out and buying an UNNECESSARY $150 Monster HDMI cable.

Several people at Dtv told me the only reciver they ship out now is the H10. Thats why they gave me the go-ahead to buy another brand elsewhere and they reimbursed me the total I paid.

Ok Guys,
If I can find the old Samsung 360, should I by it instead ?
Don't know if it has HDMI or DVI

I wouldn't think that the SD viewing would be any different, they all lack Quality as far as SD goes.

What do you guys think about the 360's

The samsung360 has DVI, from what I can see, the only reciever with HDMI right now is the H10.

I researched that receiver during early 2004. The HTL-HD is branded by Hughes, but made by LG. Same thing for the Sony SAT-HD300. LG used to market a model that was also the same. If you line-up the three together, they have exactly the same footprint and (I think) the same rear panel. I went with the Sony b/c it had some very minor features beyond the Hughes.

FWIW: the Sony has been excellent since Feb 2004.

When I hook up my using composite video cables no blackouts, but with a Sony HDMI cable I get occasional brief blackouts. Is it the cable or the H10 box? If it is the cable then I will just switch back to composite video cables and connect sound with an optical cable.

Its the HDMI connection for just about all H10's . The H10 is fine for me with component cables also, but we shouldnt have to settle for that.

I came here over a year ago looking for an answer to the momentary blackout problem but found no solution.

I joined this forum to report my fix for the momentary blackout problems with the H10 receiver. I use the HDMI out for my DLP TV and was constantly getting blackouts for 3-5 second durations regularly for over a year now... but not anymore! Bottom line is this... The unit is susceptible to low line voltage conditions.

My wife noticed two days ago they occurred whenever the heatpump came on... I knew immediately what the problem was when she said that.

I just tonight installed a $19.95 (cheapest one I could find) battery backup from tiger direct between the receiver and the unit... and guess what .. NO MORE BLACK OUTS! Each time an appliance kicks on it mometarily draws down power and the unit goes black until the power returns to normal. The battery backup takes care of that problem as all 110v power is generated from the battery and the battery absorbs the low voltage condition from the line... a cheap power conditioner!

Try it...it works!

Default HR10-250 Problem fixed

I have had SO MANY problems with the Hughes H10's. From black outs to no picture. I was at BestBuy yesterday and saw that the H10's are in NEW black boxes and on the box it says, "HDMI output - The latest Tecnology in HDMI technolgy". So I returned my old one and traded it in, thank god for warranty. I have not had the problem since then........knock on wood!

I also made sure that I got one where the serial # was the highest of them all. I think they fixed the problem with their HDMI issues since I had NO problems hooking it up through Component. Just wanted to let you all know about it since it has been the most frusterating thing I have gone through!

Happy New Year all!
