Default Directv - Why Not More Hdtv?

I recently asked DirecTv why they didn't provide more HDTV; specifically, adding HD channels with those Premium services they already have under contract. For example HBO, Showtime, MAX,& Starz all have 2 HD channels each and Encore, Bravo & The Movie Channel each have one. That would make 13 HD channels. Here was there answer:

DIRECTV:Thanks for asking us about our HDTV package. As you might imagine, high
definition channels are some of the most expensive ones for us to carry,
both in terms of what we pay the networks to distribute the programming
and the bandwidth we use to deliver them. As a result, the price per
channel in this package is higher than most of our other packages.

However, we believe that our pricing is quite competitive with what
others are charging for HD service. DISH Network charges $9.99/mo. for
its HD Pak, and many cable companies require a subscription to a digital
tier of service, in addition to $2-$10/mo. for rental of a
high-definition receiver.

"OK SO FAR BUT THEN THE OLD COMPANY LINE....".

DIRECTV:We are committed to continue providing the best in HDTV programming and
we're in constant discussions with various program providers to increase
the number of high definition programs we offer. Stay tuned to
DIRECTV.com/HDTV for the latest news and announcements as they become
available.

Our HDTV channel selection is one of the best available. Because we
offer 100% digital programming, you receive great picture quality on all
channels, not just the ones in high definition. With cable, even digital
cable, many channels are delivered in analog, resulting in signal
degradation when viewed on an HDTV.

Some other advantages to HDTV on DIRECTV:

"OK NOW LISTEN TO THIS...".

DIRECTV: No service-level requirement. Many cable companies require a
subscription to a digital service tier to receive HD content.

"SO DOES DIRECTV. YOU CAN'T JUST ORDER THE HD CHANNELS (WHICH WOULD ONLY BE 6)"

DIRECTV: HD Pay Per View programming choices.
-A wide variety of sports programs in HD, including select NFL games in
HD through the DIRECTV-exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket subscription.

"SUNDAY NFL TICKET IS ONE OF THE PACKAGES THEY HAVE WHICH NO ONE ELSE HAS."

DIRECTV:If you love DIRECTV DVR with TiVo, you'll look forward to the release
of our new HD DVR product later this spring.
__________________________________________________ _
"LATER THIS SPRING?? HEY IT'S SUMMER ALREADY! THAT PRODUCT CAME OUT QUITE A WHILE AGO AT $1000 EACH. NO RENTALS AVAILABLE." (Also, Tivo now can be programmed to receive Dish or VOOM; no problem.)

THEN ITS BACK TO THE COMPANY LINE...

NOW LISTEN TO THIS....

__________________________________________________ __

DIRECTV:With Voom, the only channels they provide are HD so you are restricted
to the channels they offer.
__________________________________________________ _

"NOT TRUE. VOOM OFFERS HD & SD CHANNELS. THE ONLY ONES I NOTICED THEY DON'T CARRY ARE FOOD CHANNEL, SCI-FI & SUNDANCE. (NOT COUNTING ALL THOSE REGIONAL CHANNELS)

VOOM CARRIES 40 HD CHANNELS FOR $79.95; DIRECTV CARRIES 6 HD CHANNELS FOR $90.00. THE NFL TICKET IS ABOUT $200 MORE."

VOOM HAS A $0 INSTALLATION. DIRECTV COST ME $450.

We hope this has explained the situation we are
in.

Sincerely,

Matthew

That's an interesting choice of words; "the situation we are in." Sounds like they are in a squeeze or problem area. Don't think so.

I was in my second year with DirecTv when I began to check around for other services. It seems you just can't get answers so you have to decide what the best deal is and what to do. Good luck.

LOL, I got the same runaround from Time-Warner Cable, but their mantra is "it's in negotiations" as to why thy're not carrying ESPNHD, the NFL Network, and the ABCHD feed. It's all a bunch of bull, and probably not likely to change until there are a lot more HD sets in service. I'd love to know exactly how many HD boxes TW currently has leased out.
