HELP - New HR21 installation wont download update

I just got an HR21 - 700 installed, and all it does is run searching for new software. It may work for a couple of minutes - longer if you tell it to search later - but eventually it will spend 15 minutes on the searching for new software screen and not finding anything. The download bar remains resolute at 0 per cent during the whole process.

I was on the phone over an hour with technical support, and I have terrific signal strength. Tried forcing a download - which didn't solve the problem, the box couldn't find the update. The girl on tech support says the system is telling the HR21 to update itself as it has the 0x16 software, which it will keep doing until it finds the update.

I don't have a land line. I could run a network cord to the HR21 from my DSL modem / router, but don't have sufficient network cable length at home to try it without a run to the store.

Anyone have a solution?

I have the exact same issue, I already have an HR20 and today had an HR21 installed and it is doing the same thing you describe. I called Tech support and the lady told me to plug a phone line in and it would update. I told her that I thought it updated throught the dish because none of my others HD DVR's or standard DVR's are plugged into the phone line and they still get their updates. She then put me on hold and 5 minutes later I was disconnected. I have tried unhooking everything and starting over but no luck. Before it starts searching for the update the signal on both tuners are great and the picture is just as good as my HR20. The black receiver looks good though and the HD picture is awesome, you just have to tell it to update later if you want to keep watching. If anyone knows a solution we would appreciate your help.

Try this put channel 200 to record and change to channel 201 do you get a searching for sat message

No, sat strength is equal on both tuners.

You can try a manual download, Reset the receiver, as soon as the blue hello your DirecTV receiver is starting up screen comes up, use your remote and press 02468 and the download should start. If u have 2 lines coming from the switch to the dvr with no splitters on them and the dvr is not downloading the software the dvr may have a problem. I have seen it happen before it was because there was one line coming to the living room and a splitter was used at the back of the unit , I remove the splitter reset it and it downloaded fine,

No splitter, that wouldn't do me any good for getting the most out of the recording features, but anyway did a force download and same thing, it tries to find the update but will not download it. I guess I am waiting on a new receiver to show up. Probably with the same issue, and will have to repeat this thing again. This is actually the first time I have had any issues with equipment. I guess it's just my turn.

SUCCESS! (I hope).

My menu has changed - now showing on demand and other things.

I show a software download at 5:45 - and it seems to be ok.

I'll repost if it starts up again.

Did you do anything or did it eventually just take the download on it's own?

Just left the hr21 on all afternoon while playing playstation. It downloaded on its own. I had spoken to to tech support and an escalation person, but hadnt paid any attention to it for about 2 hrs when i checked it.

Mine also received the update shortly after my last post. There was a forum on dbstalk about there was no stream sent out for the HR21 to download, which is why it kept searching for one with no results. Looks like they put one out shortly after 5pm est.
