Default Looking To Take The Direct TV Plunge - Couple Questions??

I looked on the Direct TV website and found that if I order "online" I can get a $10/month discount off my bill for the 1st 12 months. I was going to purchase my Direct TV contract through my local Radio Shack, so I can deal with someone local... anyway I can get this deal while still going through Radio Shack?

Next - I'm wanting the HD DVR, is the best deal the $99 dollar deal I've seen or can you get this free?

I was told at Radio Shack that the standard contract is 18 months... is this true? Seems kinda Long?

Last - I just found out about the AAA discount from this site. Do you need an actual #? My question is because I pay for my mom's AAA discount (hence it's not in my name), can I use this to get the discount? Yeah I know

My opinion.. Avoid the Shack !!! Go direct thru *D* ... It will be a 24 month contract . You have a lot of power as a new customer !!! trust me.

Did i say avoid the Shack ??? I mean, for real .

I don't personally have experience on this because I have been a customer for a long time, but A LOT of people on here seem to get the HD DVR for free by calling and saying they are undecided between Direct, Dish, and Cable. They tell the person that the other two give HD DVRs for free. A lot say they may have to call back several times to get a person to give that deal. I do know you won't get a deal beyond the advertised one unless you call them. Mine as well call Direct a few times and give it a try. If they won't budge after a few times then you'll know.

On the contract, everyone has to do it and I think it is 2 years.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - I reaaaaally appreciate it!

Another question for you guys:

I'm in the middle of purchasing land and going forward on building a house. Question - the guy at the Shack said that Direct TV will move me one time for no charge to my new home after it's built. Is this true?

Thanks

It depends how much furniture you have and if you pack the breakables. Same state only.

I am new to Directv. Been with them for a month now. Things started off a little rocky, they gave me a hr21 when i wanted a hr20, but once we got that straight, everything has been good. They only downside is that when I was with Time Warner Cable, I could receive local stations out of Cleveland, OH and Youngstown, OH and with D I only get Youngstown. Plus they are not in HD yet on D. I have to use an OTA antenna, which I should be able to get CLE HD OTA early next week.

Also, the installer was at my house for 8+ hours!!! Talk about a long day there. He did a very good job installing. Most of the wires are hidden. I had a HD DVR, HD, and a standard box installed in 3 rooms. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I have found that everyone here on this site will help you out on just about anything!

Yes it is true and completely hassle free. I just called them up told them new address and we set up an installation appointment. I took my receivers to my new house. D* told me to just dump the 5 lnb dish as they would supply a new slimline for free.

Installer shows up on time, thanks to the cool smart box I had installed he was in and out of my house in about an hour. Everything free of charge. Great experience.

It's just the newer model of the HD+DVR receiver, the older model being the HR20. They are pretty much the same thing except for a few things, such as the HR21 does not have a tuner for an OTA. The HR21 doesn't have the firmware for the new DVR scheduler, but they both now have on demand. Also the HR20-700 is silver and the HR20-100 and HR21 are black.

I think you are confusing Dish Network and Directv, since Radio Shack only sells Dish Network receivers. They quit selling Directv receivers years ago! If you want to go local, you can visit a best buy or circuit city. Directv's HD-DVR sells (leases) for $199 at retail outlets and has a 24 month contract.

Interesting - you say that buy my local Shack sells both. They gave me brochures on Both Direct TV and Dish Network, signs where even in the window (which is why I went in and asked them about it, thinking they would give me good objective advice since they sell both).

Thanks again for all the advice fellas!
