why doesn't dtv send us messages about new channels?

seems like to me dtv should send messages through your box to alert their customers of new channels and any frre channels of the weekends. is there a reason other than cost why they don't do this?
i also must say i liked my pre hd guide with the channel logos in the guide rather than the new one and had to manually pick which channels i get and don't instead of the automatic feature my sd guide had.

that would make sense,but in this day and age companies do things that don't make sense.
