A lot of reputable forum sites as this frown on the discussion of "illegal" type of discussions as you are suggesting.

Traditional way is with a pirated smart card. You can also split signals as well. With the newer generation HD receivers, though, the card bit doesn't work because they don't use cards.

If you connect your receiver to the phoneline, D* checks every 24 hours for illegal hookups and renders the card useless. And at best a pirated card usually lasts a short time since D* is aware that people are using them and is constantly working on their security measures.

So, do it at your own risk. And for the record, I don't pirate sgnals nor do I use D* (although I have some acquaintances, including D* installers, who do it regularly).

Stealing satellite signals carries a huge fine $100,000+ if you're caught.

I heard that all pirated cards are now useless. Supposedly Directv changed the system, pirated cards don't work anymore.

You have to "know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy..." People don't go around advertising pirated cards, you know.

But like Micmax said, D* is pretty well aware of the situation, and last I heard (from someone who did installations for D*), pirated cards are no longer worth it because D* security measures have pretty much rendered them useless i.e. he kept getting phone calls from people whose cards were blitzed after one day.

It's NOT worth the aggravation and legal hassles if you get caught.

As far as I know at least the P4 card is now in use everywhere and so far no one has broken the P4. The older programmers that allowed the older HU cards to be cloned will not work on the P4 cards, so when D* replaced all of the older HU cards, the pirating was over. So as far as I know these days the pirates are SOL.

D* was able to get a court order to go into the records of companies that sold equipment that could be used for pirating, such as card programmers. There used to be lots of that up in Canda because it was not illegal to pirate D* in Canda. You can't steal what you can't buy. The law has changed now, I understand.

I would like to think of the High Def Forum as being reputable

This thread is now closed as well as any future threads regarding pirating.

Thanks,

Cass
