i called Dtv today and told them I was canceling and switching to digital cable unless they could compete with their price in some way.

She gave me:
1. free hd dvr
2. free 1 yr hd
3. free 1 yr dvr
4. 75 dollar off-air antenna credit
5. $10 off existing monthly bill
6. free nfl superfan
7. nfl ticket w/ premier package for $69/mo for 4 months (that is 69 for full monthly bill, not in addition to current bill)

That's a great deal! I wondering if they would give it to me? They are calling all the time asking me to sign back up with them. I'm wondering that if I tell them that if they can compete with Comcast equipment prices (I have Dish not Comcast) then I would switch if they would meet the deal that you got?

WOW that is an awesome deal...I too called today to cancel and telling them that I am switching to Dish in order to get HD...and she put me on Hold and told me that she would waive the $299 lease fee and all I would pay is the $19.95 price...I guess I should have pushed for more but I was pleased with that...So I will be getting a HD-DVR with an installation date of 8/29...do you know if they supply an HDMI cable or should I purchase one before hand?

I would have just gave you the programming so count yourself lucky and by no means dose that mean everyone will get the same offers you did. Im not a CRG rep but I find it hard to believe they gave you all that.

Donít use HDMI it sucks, composite and digital optical for sound is the best way to go right now.

What is a digital optical cable? What about component cables instead of composite? Why do you say hdmi cables suck? I thought they were supposed to be the best.

I am currently using HDMI and have no problems. The HR20 did come with HDMI cable. Composite cables do work just fine, but I like one cable for all. It is ultimatley your choice.

Digital optical is for sound. It carries the digital-surround signal in a digital-form (bitstream) on a single strand of fiber-optic wire. Also called Toslink by some. Your DTV HD receiver will have one of these for output and your stereo receiver would be the other connection (input). None of my TV's have optical inputs but that doesn't mean there aren't any out there that do. I suspect it would be overkill to have an optical input (5.1 surrround signal/DTS surround) on a TV that probably only has 2 speakers.

I use HDMI but will admit it seems rather picky at times. My system seemed more stable when I had my DTV receiver connected to my Panasonic plasma via component cables. I wanted to also connect my 1st gen XBOX to the plasma and it does not do HDMI so I swapped the DTV receiver to HDMI and put the XBOX on component cables.

I can't really tell a difference in picture quality between component vs. HDMI but there are MANY variables at play here. The HD source firmware, The TV, the TV firmware, etc. I suspect all those variables probably create an obvious difference for others so what may work for me or the next guy, may not work for you. "Try it and see" is probably the best advice.

The thing I like about HDMI is that it carries both audio and video on the single cable. Component is obviously only video so you still need the additional connection for sound.

I have used HDMI with my two Sony TVs (one for about a year, one for about a month), and I have two identical Denon 4300 receivers, and I have never had any kinds of problems -- and the picture and audio is phenomenal! I wonder if the people who get mediocre or poor results with HDMI are suffering from receiver or TV problems, it's sure not DTV's fault.

Remember too the receiver *could* have bandwidth problems handling 1080i or maybe even 720 if it's old, that's a lot of pixels that some of the receivers out there weren't built to handle. Just a thought.

Oddly, my TV has an optical out, but not an optical in.

Very interesting deal. I recently asked dish, having been with them for about 10 years, for a free dvr upgrade. Ive always got free equipment with a contract, apparently this isnt the case with a dvr, as the best they could do was $100 outta my pocket plus the standard monthly dvr fee. If direct's hd promises pan out here in the near future, this deal you got is just another nail in dish's coffin for spendy service in my home. January cant come soon enough.

It has an out because your tv has an internal hd tuner, got to be able to get that ota hdtv surround sound to your receiver some how! It doesnt have an in for the reason carlos mentioned
