In both cases its realistic to expect some payment in those cases for hd.
Exception being the overtheair HD if u have the right stuf to get that.

Or for various subscriber channels (hd or not) but thats not a HD issue.

As noted here, HD has never been a cost item excluding the above aspects and for digitalcable users has always been free and currently always will be.
digital cable is free because they have NOTHING to offer in HD, in comparison to directv HD

Also, channels like MHD and Discovery Channel are really channels we already have. It's the only way we can get MTV and Discovery Content in HD. I could care less about HD Net and HD Net Movies. Anyway, that's my two cents.
MHD is not MTV-HD. It is a new full time HD channel shared by MTV, VH-1 and CMT.

MTV-HD may launch as early as Oct 31th.

Digital Conversion is only required for broadcast TV over the airwaves. TV Stations can still go via Fiber or Sat. to anyone in analog though it would be stupid.

Non-Broadcast channels such as those of the Discovery Networks can be analog (converted to digital at 480p and then down converting back to 480i in the receiver) forever if Cable and Sat providers will allow it. Which they won't but they have not set any time frame to require it.

I think Cable/Sat providers should require all channels be presented in 1080i or 720p with SD content by stripping the right and left wide screen portions and then down converting to 480p for non-HD tv's and receivers. This would allow for the dumping of the old sats that don't use mpeg-4 and save D* lots of money.

Yes, but congress got cold feet since they forgot to ask the industry if they could design an affordable set-top box to down-convert from 1080i to 480i for older non-digital tv's. (there are digital tv's that aren't HD that can watch at 480p or digital SD).

No, There will still be a $9.99 access fee and a $4.99 HD extra package fee.

We have always had to pay $9.99 for HD.

Yes and No. You probably have HD channels right now with your current setup, around 9 or so. But that is all you will be able to get if you don't change your dish.

My installation is coming in a couple of weeks. Is the 5 LNB Multi dish the one I want??

I noticed that you guys mentioned some dishes only provide a portion of the HD channels. And one particular dish will give you all the HD channels, now and in the future.

Is the 5 LNB the dish I want in order to get all the HD channels or should I call back and ask for different equipment??
