Cool You CANNOT get the new HD channels with an HR10-250

Hopefully this title will stop some of the constantly repetitive posts about this.

The HR10-250 is MPEG 2

The new channels are MPEG 4

You need a H20 or HR20 to receive them (and a 5lnb dish)

Yup,

Maybe this should be a "Sticky" thread so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Yep this is pretty obvious. So now the question... why pay $300 to upgrade? $300 could buy cable with HD package for a long time (factoring in sign up incentives etc, etc).

I shelled out a pretty penny for my HR10-250 less than two years ago. Are we D* customers just supposed to factor a bi-yearly $300 equipment upgrade into our service cost? If so, D* is the worst deal in town.

If you already have an HD Package or HD DVR like your 10-250, the only charge to upgrade is the shipping of the new unit and satellite ($19.95). A bargain to me.

This may be true if you already have a 5 LNB dish, but I can not confirm as I do not.

Not true. Its 99 dollars. Just spoke to retention today. 99 bucks, even if u have an HR10-250, even if you own or lease it.

Its BS.

But hey, they are letting us keep the leased HR10s for SD broadcasts, they don't want them back.

Whoopeee.

Hey, they're not going to stop broadcasting in MPEG-2 when the new MPEG-4 satellite is turned on. You will still be able to receive everything you currently receive in HD with the HR10. I have a 800GB HR10 which I will continue to use to store HD movies. (It holds 103 hrs in HD) I'll use my 1000GB HR20 for everything else.

I had an HR10-250 with a 3 LNB. I called last month and told them I wanted to upgrade to the HR20-100 DVR and 5 LNB. Within 5 days the new system was installed...for $19.95. Anyone who frequents this forum should know by now that if you don't get this deal or any deal on your first call, just call back and talk to another rep. If you still can't get it, call customer retention. Oh and they also threw in 6 Months of Free Starz & Showtime for me because they showed up a day late.

Thumbs down I must be talking to the wrong people at DTV

?? I called a couple of days ago and the only thing the rep offered me was the assurance that my 250 would keep receiving the channels it does now. Nothing about upgrade, or anything that remotely resembled a retention effort. No, I didn't ask for customer retention, and it wasn't offered. If D* wants to keep my business, I shouldn't need to beat the bushes to find the correct person or department on my own.

I've been with D* since the original RCA HD receiver, but now that Cablevision is offering more HD channels free as part of their digital service, and seems to offer premium channels D* does with no noticeable blocking, I really don't see any reason to stay with D*. At least Cablevision in my area has been very prompt is resolving problems and offering free exchanges of cable boxes for newer service offerings.

So, in summary, my 250 I paid $900 for won't receive new channels, but I will be able to get them on cable without having to put up with the arrogant CSR's at D*. Guess what direction I'm leaning...

You may want to verify that. The guy in retention during my argument the other day told me all channels were moving to mpeg4 come sept/oct and the HR10-250's would only be suitable for standard DVRS, no HD other than OTA.

He flat out told me all the channels from 70-99 would be going away on that box.

He also then told me they didn't want the leased HR10s back when they do the upgrade because of that reason. He said they are letting people keep them to use them as standard DVRs if they wish.
