Default Question about Upgrading my HR10

Hi,

I currently have an HR10 that I bought outright about two years ago, just before they started the lease program.

I'm considering going ahead with the upgrade, although I'm not happy having to pay to replace equipment that's all working fine for me now (except that I can't get the new HD channels). I have two questions though:

1. Since I own my HR10 outright, DTV can't force me to give it back to them when I upgrade, can they?

2. I watch a lot of PBS and some CW shows, as well as some of the sub channels from an OTA antenna in my attic. After the upgrade, can I keep the HR10 hooked up to my TV to use as an OTA tuner, so I can continue to record those channels? I have two HDMI ports on the back of my TV, so I have room to plug it in. Otherwise, I'd need to buy the new add-on tuner for the new DVR, correct?

DTV doesn't want your HR10, it is old equipment and there is nothing they can do with it. They can't even refurbish it and give it to anyone else since their HD channels are about to go MPEG-4.

Then why do I keep reading here about customers being asked to turn in the HR10 when they upgrade, and having to fight with DTV to keep it?

Anyhow, does anyone have an answer to the other question, whether I can keep my HR10 hooked up to record the OTA channels?

I am sure an unsubscribed HR10-250 can receive OTA channels. I am equally sure you won't get any guide information or use of the TiVo features, including scheduling and making recordings. Maybe the live buffer will work, I don't know, but will try this setup in the not too distand feature because I am likely to just drop DirecTV and Comcast as soon as we can and live with OTA. I do have another OTA receiver with firewire for recording although the stupid timer recording function isn't reliable, it is the Samsung SIR-T165 and it is buggy for that purpose.

Just as many customers are also asked not to return the old equipment too. So there...

Angry What mpeg2/4 on original 3 sats

I have a 3 lnd 72 cm dish to counter rain fade.

Real question is, why is it so hard to find which mpeg 2 anbd mpeg 4 HD channels will be found on the original three Sats when every thing is settled. Not at all happy about giving up 72 cm dish. Have not found equiv for 5 sat feeds. Could care less about locals over Sat.

(and dont tell me rain fade is not an issue)

I recently rec'd a letter inviting me to take Dtv up on their upgrade offer for the newer HD system. I own two HR10-250's. When I called, they spelled it out for me. I made sure I could keep my equipment and I wouldn't be paying a lease fee even thou they would own the newer HR21-100's. More HD channels for the same $9.99 I'm paying now.

Had: HR10-250 with 3 LMB oval dish.

Upgraded to: new mpeg 4 TIVO and 5 LMB dish.

Cost: told $199 + $19.95 install charge. Bitched and got it to $99 and a new 2 year agreement. Bitched some more, sent to Customer Retention, got everything for free with a 2 year service contract.

Installation next Sunday (of all days!)

Thanks for the info!!

Just to clarify, the new HR series that you are getting is not a tivo brand DVR.

And...its LNB
