What is HD?

I apologize if this has been answered about 50 times, but I can't locate it in all of the threads.
I was able to get a refurbished new HD-DVR sent to me yesterday. I am planning on replacing my current HR10-250 with the HD-DVR. My question is - If I were to still use the HR10-250 (on another HD tv), will it continue to receive the current HD channels (such at 73, 75, 76, etc...). I know it won't receive the new mpeg4 HD's, I am more concerned with the current channels that receiver gets. The Directv rep I spoke to the other day said that soon the HR10-250 will not receive the mpeg2 HD channels. Is this true? Thanks, John |

I called up Directv last week after I got my new plasma and inquired about the new HD channels. They offered to replace my 2 HR10-250s and upgrade the dish at no charge. I was so stoked that I ordered two additional HR20s ($300 each, but billed to my account in three installments) for my other two HDTVs (previously I had two SD tivos and two HD). I was delighted when the installer left the old Tivos because we had a lot of recording on them that we wanted to keep. They won't be hooked up to the dish because I have all 8 lines used up by the four DVRs, but they are connected to the TVs. So now I'm really ready for these HD channels!

i called the customer retention # listed here, and was surprised with the ease of upgrading. he said they would replace my current hd dvr with the new equipment for free and move my current system into another room. and if i wait six months, they will replace that unit for free too. he said if i wanted to do both units at the same time, it would cost $99. i have an appointment for October 1st. hopefully the new channels will be up and running. thanks for the heads-up on what to ask for. my neighbor just paid $199 for his upgrade.

I haven't had any luck with upgrading. I have called time and time again and only one rep was nice. None of them would help me out with the deals that some of you got. It was either $299.00 or $199.00 for the HD DVR receiver. Some of the reps were the rudest people I have ever dealt with. Not sure what else to do.

you have to ask for the customer retention department. remind them what a loyal customer you are, and that you don't believe you should be buying equipment every year or so to keep up with their changes. let them know how you've been treated in previous contacts with them. your the boss. remind them. you can also mention that you've read online about all the deals they are making with other customers.

I did all that. Talked to Customer Retention but nobody cared. I found a H20 on the best buy outlet store for $25. It's in new condition.

to the HR20 HD DVR.
I'm so p*ssed!! Two years ago I shelled out $800 for the DTV Tivo HD box. I've been a DTV customer for almost 5 years, HD, DVR, Sports subscriptions and HBO. My father-in-law gets a phone call and upgrades FOR FREE. I've talked to two CSRs and they give me NOTHING. They say it's supply and demand and "they're flying off the shelves." |

Just called the customer retention number (1-800-739-4388 ). I said I wanted to upgrade my hi-def equipment, she asked if I wanted a DVR, I said yes... She quoted me a price of $299, then said 'but that doesn't sound quite right'. I said "I've already got HD equipment and the HD package, so I hear that the upgrade is being done for 19.95...". She put me on hold, came back, said "It's coming up $299, but I'm going to give it to you for $19.95".... Whatever! I'm happy... They're showing up Friday, so we'll see how it goes...

I just got off the phone with them for the 100th time. Called the 1-800-739-4388 number. They offered me the $199 deal, I accepted it. I can see spending $199 over $299 anyday, it is a HD receiver. I told her that I know alot of people getting the $19.95 deal, she didn't budge. Oh well..with Hockey season started & the center ice freeview over, I had to add it so I had no more leverage. Overall happy I atleast got a better deal then the $299.

It is a total joke this game they are playing with their customers. No other company has all these "depends who you talk to " deals. I hate to see some of you pay $199....$299 etc. I called to upgrade last week and got the HD-DVR, another HD receiver and SD DVR installed for ZERO $. They did not show up on Saturday so I called back yesterday and they are here right now. Because of the no-show they are also giving me one year free HD progamming and another $20.00off my bill for a year. Why can't they just be fair to ALL current customers?

I posted this to a different thread, but it's probably more helpful here.
I'm a ten year customer with and old HR10-250. I am one of those rare customers that paid a one-time $250 charge for a lifetime TIVO service plan. Deal was no monthly charge (other than the standard add'l receiver charge) for all TIVO's on the account for life, so long as I maintained a D* account without interruption, even if I moved and kept D*. It is for the life of the account, not the life of any piece of hardware. I called about upgrading to the HR20. Call went to India and the woman told me I would have to pay for DVR service for the non-TIVO HR20 because I had lifetime TIVO, not DVR and that DVR's were a completely different service than TIVO. I went ballistic and demanded a manager. After being put on permanent hold I called back in on my second line and got a nice guy named William in Idaho. He looked it up and said no problem, standard policy for the few of us who bought this (no longer available) deal, was to provide free service for any type of DVR. He claims it is a separate $5.99 monthly charge for all others. Then William and I talked upgrade, making him aware I had read hundreds of forum threads on the subject and was aware of dozens of differing deals that hundreds of different people got. He caught on immediately and went to the bottom line of his script and said it's $299 plus shipping, but because they love me so much there will be no charge whatsoever and noted on the order that I needed a very experienced technician for the install because I have four Tivos and an attic antenna that is being diplexed in. The HR10-250 goes to the master BR where the only HD reception was live OTA. I figure I'll upgrade the old HR10-250 for free a couple more times over the next year or two. The only bad news was that I had to admit that my actual service address was in Minneapolis and no longer in the NYC suburbs, otherwise the tech wouldn't be able to find me. Now I'll need to buy the MLB package to see the Yankees and Mets, but I'll get the rest of the package, so I can root for whoever's playing the Red Sux. |

yeah, i did the tivo lifetime also. it actually did stipulate in the contract that it was for the original unit only, unless there was a defect within the warranty period. i then upgraded to a new tivo unit (couple years ago) and after some arguing with them, directv said they would honor the lifetime service on the new unit. a couple weeks ago i got all of the new equipment for the new roll out, and never even discussed the dvr service with them. it still shows "lifetime dvr service" in my account online. works for me!
