Default HR20 100 ~vs~ HR20 700

I just had a black HD-DVR installed. It's the HR20 100. However, I've read post on here about the HR20 700. Does anyone know the difference between the two? Should I be upset I didn't get the latest and greatest.

The 100 model is the newer one of the two. 100 model is from RCA.
However, the 100 model firmware is a step or two behind the 700. If it's working fine for you, not to worry.

Since the black model is newer, some silver 700 owners are envious. Consider yourself lucky.

The -100b has two ethernet ports. One is enabled the other is not. The -100 series, 100b/100s just had a national release of firmware 146 released yesterday. It also has an external antenna for the RF remote.

Other than that, they are pretty much the same. By the way, the 100s is a silver skin.

The main difference is who manufacutred the machine. That is what defines 100 or 700.

Have fun. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Thanks everyone I feel better already.

I played around with it some last night. I was getting a load sharp popping sound on channels 70 thru 79 it turned out the Dolby Digital was not turned on during set up. Now the picture and the sound is great.

I had another thread where I discussed my experience with this issue. I couldn't make the loud sharp popping sound go away regardless of which mode I put it in.

Do you still have the problem or did they replace the box? I need to know for futur reference.

As soon as, I turned the dolby digital bit stream on my problem went away

Actually I beleive the HR20-100 is the older version. If you call D* and ask about them they'll say you will get a hr20-700. There is a small majoprity of customers who get these because the D* warehouses in specific cities still have them and they install whatever they have in the warehouse. For instance if that receiver ends up needing replaced, I can guarantee you that you'll get a hr20-700. Also another difference is that the Satellite 1 and 2 inputs are vertical on the the hr20-100 and horizontal on the hr20-700

The -100 and -700 are the same just different mfg. the -100 is the only HR20 still being made the new DVRs are now the HR21 same DVRs as the HR20 for the most part but without OTA and has a bigger harddrive and both Ethernet ports are active.

The HR20-700 has a 300gb hard drive and the HR20-100 has a 320gb hard drive. Both still record the same amount (30 hrs mpeg2 HD / 50 hrs mpeg4 HD).

Didn't the 700 have temp problems? I know the 100 is supposed to run pretty cool.

Default HR20-100 Questions

I've been out of the loop for a while and would like to know if someone can answer couple questions:

Since I want OTA stations so I can know what the news is during bad weather, I guess the HR20-100 is the box I want. Yes??

1. What can one do with the ethernet ports or point me to someplace where I can read for myself.

2. I believe in my reads here and elsewhere indicated an outboard (usb) harddrive can be added. True?? SATA/IDE???

Any other info is welcome. I'm ready to move! Spouse has approved this message but like Congress, has attached a limited spending bill to it.

Thanks,
Alex

Both of the HR20's support OTA. The HR21 does not.

1) The ethernet port is used for On Demand downloads and can also stream media from a Viiv-enabled media server on your LAN.

2) You can add an external eSATA drive (NOT usb) which effectively replaces the internal drive on your box (it disables the internal drive). Don't expect to pull content off of the external drive with a PC.

I don't know about the "Viiv-enabled media server" but I'll look into it a bit. I'm not sure I would need/want it at this point.

Thanks for the quick response.

An extra piece of hardware (AM21) will soon be available for the HR21's. This will allow OTA reception/recording on the HR21 models. In addition to On Demand, you can use the ethernet port to access music & photos on a PC.
